Welcome to another action packed Wizzy News this week where we celebrate a number of great victories for our teams and some outstanding individual performances. If you missed last week’s edition please click here
The game of cricket
Following on from the video on having a runner last week, we are going to cover off the ‘Bye and Leg Bye’ this week which includes a situation where the umpire allows the batters to attempt a run but then asks the players to return to their original ends – an uncommon event in a game but one that actually occurred in the Second X1 game against Bosham on Saturday. Please click on the link below for another Stephen Fry masterclass ..
Honours Boards
Congratulations to all the players who feature on this week’s Honours Board. Some fantastic achievements to celebrate including two undefeated maiden centuries and a maiden league 50.

Team selections for this week
The Selection committee had another selection dilemma on our hands – a good problem to have but never easy leaving out talented players. The good news is that we have two really strong teams out and for those that have missed out this week – please note your cricketing services are always valued and I have no doubt will be required in the future!!
This week we also welcome back Rob Knight for the first time this season. Thanks again to our stand in scorer David Wilson – its been a pleasure! The seconds scorer Suzana Braddock is also gearing up for a live scoring session on Playcricket – love to see it!
Go well everyone……

Match Reports
First X1 vs Crawley Eagles
Wisborough Green CC 1st XI welcomed Crawley Eagles 2nds to the green on what was forecast to be a nice day. Having won the toss we decided to have a bat – with the aim of piling the runs on the board and making sure Eagles had to swing from the hip in the following chase. At 35 for 3, all ct behind to H. Imran, things weren’t quite going to plan. In at 5 walks 1st XI debutant Will Crombie, and along with Tommy (32) builds match saving partnership. It was a chanceless, balanced and when required powerful innings – bringing up his 100* in the final over of the innings. One hell of a century – well batted Will! Will was supported well by Tommy, Oscar and then Junior as Wisborough battled strongly against some really nagging bowling. When the chance came to capitalise on a late bowling change the guys took full advantage – hitting Asif for 39 from his 3 overs. Wisborough ended on 199 – a few short of where we would have wanted at the toss but given the position we found ourselves in early on – we ended the happier side at tea.
Thanks to the Wisborough Green Farm Shop for an excellent selection of sandwiches and amazing cakes!!
We started strongly with the ball and immediately Eagles were behind the required rate. Hugo (2 for 30) picked up the Eagles skipper early with a great one handed grab by Oscar at square legs. Junior (0 for 9) bowled brilliantly and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, but with only 9 conceded from his 5 overs helped build some great pressure. Shaffrin Nazeer (a frustrating lefty) batted well and picked off the bad balls to compile a decent 50. He then walked into a straight one from Joey (2 for 34) and when he looked round he received the dreaded Mattock nod – the green were celebrating and the Eagles opener slightly confused until Peter finally raised the finger.
N-n-n-n-nick Klein (1 for 28) struggled to find his run up rhythm but it didn’t stop him b-b-b-b-bagging a wicket, bowling nicely up the hill. Whilst wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with some great arrows from Ash “Littler” Perry (2 for 30) and some brilliant bowling from Will Dixon (3 for 25), Eagles were not yet dead and buried. Fazan Basheer was proving to be stubborn and kept finding the boundary.
With 10 overs to go Eagles were 8 down and only 60 short the target. The returning March took care of the final major threat by smartly bowling Basheer when on 28. Even when 9 down Eagles lasted another 4 or 5 overs, and closed to within 42 with 7 overs remaining. I then turned to Aah Perry, who hit bullseye first ball back to take the final wicket. Special mention must also go to Oscar who bagged 4 catches in total – two of which were brilliant one handed grabs!!
Another 30 points and great all round team performance….on we go to West Chilt next week.

Second X1 vs Bosham
A firing partnership between Harry Hunter and Matt Ritchie inspired Wisborough Green CC to a crushing victory over Bosham CC match at Bosham
Tarni Dixon and Steve Calder-Smith opened the way in the batting with a steady partnership helping lay a base for the batting side
Wisborough Green were cruising with 50-0 after 7 overs, however, Tarni was cut short of his fantasies and could only reach 18, however, it was the opposite for Steve, who reached 54 after being bowled out after claiming ‘he couldn’t see the ball’ because he is ‘colour blind’.
It was Jack Dixon and Alex Martin to follow, with both contributing to the runs with over 10 runs each, and Ran Dawson unable to get going and was unlucky to get out so early.
Harry Hunter followed Ran and Matt Ritchie followed Alex, after a slight shake in the batting, stability was needed to set the boat sail again.
Matt and Harry created a fundamental partnership of 183 in 19 overs, with Matt reaching a wonderful 106* and Harry scoring 60 runs, this helped Wisborough Green reach 298 and it was looking for a comfortable win for the Wizzy.
To open the bowling, it was Matt and Ran, with two wickets each to their names, it was looking hard for Bosham to get anything out of this game.
To rub salt in the wounds of Bosham, super Joshy Dixon, took 4 wickets in nine overs, whilst Harry Maggs kept their runs down to a minimum, in which they only scored 13 runs off his 5 overs.
It was Wisborough Green’s second win of the season helping them maintain their 3rd spot in Division 10 West

Under 14 vs Edenbridge
U14’s Produce Clinical Display in Emphatic Victory
I have watched a lot of cricket over the last five years and I find it difficult to recall a bowling and fielding performance as complete as this. Accurate, sharp, energetic with great encouragement from within the group. They had a plan, set an attacking field and took ownership of the match and saw it through. No overthrows, only two boundaries conceded in the entire innings. They all deserve a mention so here they are
Nick Reed (WK)
Buddy Edwardes
Bella Boyce
Freddie Brookfield
Rafferty Finn
Harry Maggs (C)
Olivia Boyce
Eli Foster
Josh Braddock
Henry Foden
Hector Dawson
Edenbridge were all out for 52 after 14.3 overs.
The runs were knocked off with little trouble by Nick, Buddy and Bella.
It is hard to pick out highlights in a complete team performance like this but there were a couple of memorable moments, Raff with an absolutely stunning catch at slip, a runout from the rocket arm of Hector, and a top quality debut from Eli Foster.
Having dropped five catches in the opening fixture we have focused on fielding in training and it is rewarding to see this pay off.
That was an outstanding performance, well done.

Under 12 vs Horsham
4th game of the season already upon us and this time, versus the mighty Horsham U12s. Wisborough won the toss and elected to bowl keen to deliver another win for our team.
Hector Dawson led this week and opened the bowling with a wicket in the first over caught by Eli Foster, then followed by a 2nd wicket bowled in the 3rd over. A fantastic opening. Horsham fought back with a solid partnership lasting the next 6 overs building a bulk of runs between the two batters, both who retired with great scores. Henry Nicholls and Olivia Church also both took a wicket to limit the scoring.
Horsham ended their innings on 160 for 4 after their allotted 20 overs. A strong target to beat.
Horsham opened with pacey bowling as anticipated but Freddie and Eli partnered well and added 19 runs to the board. Hector then joined Eli to push together another 41 runs. Full credit to the whole team for keeping their cool against some great bowling from Horsham and steadily the score increased with everyone playing their part. A solid and cohesive team approach, delivering in all overs but it was not Wisboroughs game this time. Wisboroughs Innings closed at a respectable 104 for 9.
However, every ending has a new beginning and this arrives on Saturday versus Horsham Trinity. Let’s go!
