Match reports

First X1 vs Southwater

  • Wisborough succumb to another loss away at Southwater.
  • Poor shot selection and lack of patience don’t aid Wisborough’s cause.
  • Ragg, Jnr & that man Farmer only batsmen to build an innings.
  • Wicket favours bowlers, with Wis posting a dissappointing 138
  • Jnr finally fires himself up to bowl a fantastic opening spell and put Wisborough in with a shout as he dismisses danger men Baker & Brouwer without troubling the board and ending with figures of 8-34-4.
  • Nick Klein also digs away with figures of 8-27-1.
  • Farmer bowls a tight spell of 8-19 without reward.
  • Ex player Bell comes back to haunt Wisborough with 44. Where was he last year when he averaged 1 last season ? …
  • Southwater seal victory with 5 wickets to spare
  • Positives to be taken but plenty to think about as massive game looms at home to Horsham.

  • Wisborough welcomed Bosham to the Green on a warm sunny day
  • Skipper Frank Vickery won the toss and elected to field on a somewhat damp wicket
  • Colts Will Dixon and Eddie Ragg open the bowling and keep it tight

  • Batters pile on the runs and put on 107 before Will Dixon claims valuable wicket
  • Josh Dixon delights after claiming 2 scalps including a great catch by dad Tarnie
  • Big hitting batters go after the bowlers in the final overs and finish on credible 242
  • Steve Calder Smith and Tom Dawson make great start and put on 116 for the first wicket with each reaching their half centuries
  • Steve invents new way of getting out ‘towel knocks bail over’ after playing his trademark cut shot
  • Tom Dawson departs shortly thereafter – much to the delight but somewhat dissapointing response from the fielders
  • Tarnie Dixon offers some great catching practice for Bosham fielder
  • Batting collapse follows with only Eddie Ragg showing some form of resistance
  • Callum Price forgets how to hit the ball after attempting a reverse sweep
  • Green end innings on 176 in the 36th over falling well short of the target
  • Dissapointing day but some great individual performances to celebrate

The Sunday Supplement

The skippers rouse in offering Henfield first use of slow low track under some imposing cloud cover initially paid off with a wonderful opening burst of swing and seam bowling from Will Dixon (3 for 24) and Ran Dawson (2 for 27), reducing Henfield to 35 for 5.

Henfield dug in thereafter, handling some probing questions from Harry Hunter and new member Juan Vorster, and at the halfway point were 72 for 6.

This being a Sunday fixture however, Henfield closed at 181 for 8 from their 35 overs.

The Supplements response started brightly with Richard Wilson looking in imperious form before he decided to run himself out and Chris Marshall punching back foot drives through extra cover with aplomb, a shot not often seen on a Wisborough track of late. Chris (41) and Mick Holland (22) kept us ahead of the run rate before a slight malaise helped set up a wonderful finish, and act two of the Dawson and Dixon show.

Timing the chase to perfection, and with three needed to win off the last ball of the day, Will pierced mid-on and mid-off for the winning boundary. (Wiz 183 for 7. Will 45no, Ran 20no)

A competitive game played in good spirit and my thanks to Darren Hunter for scoring and Tom Dawson for umpiring the second innings.

Richard Mellor – skipper

Great block from Charlie Maunder . It’s clearly all about getting the right pose with the lips first …
Charlie Maunder and Chris Marshall having a chin wag in the middle
Chris Marshall returning to form with a great knock
Classic cover drive from Will Dixon
Ran Dawson and Will Dixon chatting tactics in the middle
Trish Dixon deciding she’d have a nice relaxing afternoon watching cricket on the Green…
Another classy shot on the leg side from Will Dixon
What’s not to like about cricket when you’ve knocked off the winnings runs with the final ball of the game .. Well played Will Dixon and Ran Dawson

Under 14

This weeks U14’s match saw Wisborough Green take on Steyning at home under a clear blue sky.

Steyning won the toss and elected to bat.

Wisborough kept the visiting side’s run rate low but gave away a number of extras which didnt help the cause.

A great bowling display from Fraser Williams finished off the Steyning innings for 101 rus in 18.5 overs with Fraser claiming 3 scalps in 2 overs.

Ran Dawson and Sam Williams opened the batting for the Green and played some great text book shots

Ran retired not out 46, Sam not out 23 and the rest in extras gave Wisborough 103 runs off just 13 overs and a well deserved 10 wicket victory

Well done all – another good performance!

Under 12

Our U12’s were in action on a warm, bright morning in a well fought game against Steyning.

Captain for the day Rafferty Finn, returning from a 6 week injury layoff, won the toss and rightly put the visitors into bat on a wicket that was still a little damp after the overnight dew.

We started positively, taking early wickets before their middle order piled on the runs. Unfortunately our extras count of 55 contributed to almost half of the 120 we had to chase, but we gave it our best.

Throughout the first 10 overs our run rate predicted an easy win before the scoreboard slowed. Even with 2 overs to go we had cause to hope but we fell just short, losing by 7 runs.

Lots of learnings to take away from the game which will give us focus for our Friday nights. Very well deserved Player of the Day went to Gethin Wood for his fast, accurate bowling taking 1 for 15 and his intelligent batting that kept us in the game till the last over, carrying his bat with 17.

Rafferty was the other players’ nomination for his bowling (1 for 13), a runout and 23 runs. George Redgrove was looking well in before falling for a valuable 10. Ben Gwilliam so strong again keeping wicket. Great to see Archie Gray’s new spin bowling earning him 2 wickets. Everyone was again really tight in the field. So, despite the loss it was another great team performance that the whole team should be really proud of.
