Honours Boards for this week

Congratulations to all the players who feature on the Honours Boards this week – good to see some of our younger players being recognised for the first time.

Match reports

First X1 vs Horsham

• Horsham win the toss and elect to bat on a rather warm sunny afternoon
• Sizzle strikes in his first over as the batsman drags on.
• Jnr rolls back the years – hits the lines and reduces Horsham to 13/3
• DJ takes great slip catch
• After the ball stopped swinging it turned out to be a very long afternoon as the pitch turned flatter than the A272 back in 1935 when it was first built
• Horsham ex-prem batsmen hits fine 100 and Horsham finish on respectable 264
• 46 extras don’t help the cause….
• Wickets tumble as Wisborough openers struggle against opening bowlers. Matt Watts contemplates installing DRS at the Pavillion end….
• Green reeling on 40/4
• Farmer and Wilson start the re-build and dig Wisborough back into the game before Wilson falls for a fine 48. The 16 year old is one for the future that’s for sure !
• Farmer soon falls after trying to kick on for the win again after another captain’s innings
• Stott, Jnr & Klein get Wisborough to the 200 mark, and bring up the final losing bonus points.
• A dissapointing day on the Green as skipper Farmer rallies the troops again to keep pushing for the next victory

Second X1 vs Findon

• Afternoon gets off to a bad start after players and umpire are stumped and caught out before a ball was bowled after turning up at Findon’s ground to play Findon rather than a field in the middle of Worthing
• Skipper Frank Vickery won the toss and elected to field on a rather warm sunny afternoon.
• Opener trapped LBW early on by great Frank Vickery delivery
• Wickets tumble early on as 10 man Wisborough team take the upper hand
• Newby Saffa Juan Vorster – a welcome addition to the Green bowling lineup – bags 2 in his opening spell
• Dropped catches cost Green dearly as middle order batsman take full advantage
• Josh Dixon bags 3 valuable wickets and Harry Hunter weighs in with 2 at end
• Findon end their innings on 239
• Ken Vickery and Steve Calder Smith get the innings off to a good start with 30 and 31 respectively
• Alex Philp hits good form with the bat and posts valuable 40
• Green batsmen crumble as wickets tumble with Harry Hunter the only other batsman to finish with double figures
• Green end up falling short by 60
• A somewhat dissapointing day for the Green where the old addage ‘catches win matches’ brought extra meaning

The Sunday Supplement

• The scene was set with a Sunday side like no other – new talent in old clothes – the WG Sunday side was brimming with players that had hidden their candles under bushels for many years.  This is a time when stars are born and they were.
• Wisborough Green lost the loss and were put into bat.  Always a difficult decision to get the batting order right with so much depth – Tom Dawson and Kami Naghdi were the chosen ones to open the batting. 
• Tom started in spectacular fashion striking the ball cleanly across the corners of the ground. Unfortunately there was a momentary communication glitch on an optimistic single and Kami was unfairly run out and heading back to the pavilion
• Tom continued the charge ably and elegantly supported by Mick Hollands who was relishing his new bat and some fine stroke play.
• This partnership was looking great until Tom lost balance whilst pirouetting towards a wide ball and chipped the ball towards point which was well caught by Alen Lang (WG colts cricket coach) – in any case an impressive 35.
• At this stage the youth were brought in to stabilise the innings and Zac Dawson (U13) was looking good until he succumbed to a ball that kept low likewise Harry Hunter (U15) missed a straight one and was heading back to the shed
• Mick continued to look impressive and composed with effortless stroke making whilst accumulating runs.  Tarni Dixon on the other hand was struggling to hit the ball off the square and in the unlikely event that did happen it went straight to a fielder
• Mick (The Destroyer) and Tarni (The Defender) developed a useful partnership and although quick singles were few and far between runs continued to flow and the score accumulated
• Mick made the first error of his innings after a magnificent 66 and hit the ball back to the bowler and in comes one of the stars of the day – Wolfie Finger (not been on a cricket field for a very long time)
• Wolfie and Tarni continue to keep the score moving to the end through a combination of intelligent placement and agricultural hitting respectively
• Wisborough Green ended up on 172 for 5 off 30 overs
• Over the Tea interval there was much talk about how our impressive bowling attack was best placed to unnerve and destabilise the opposition – many options and difficult decisions
• It was agreed that Harry Hunter and Josh Dixon should open the bowling.  Combining seam with spin is bound to befuddle the openers and to a degree it worked – Josh claimed a wicket in his first over – an LBW decision which the umpire was reluctant to communicate and the batsmen less than happy to receive – anyway eventually the message was received and the No 2 batsmen was heading back to the pavilion
• Thereafter the Ricky Holland XI batsmen batted very well against some good bowling.
• Tom Dawson was asked to bowl medium pace down the hill (this was a first for him) and he did so with athleticism and style and was unlucky not to get a wicket as the ball pinged off the edge as he moved the ball away from the batsmen
• In the midst of this another star was born – Michael Gadd did most of the fielding for the entire team as the ball followed him wherever he was positioned and he did a courageous job of getting his body behind the ball to stop a number of boundaries
• Wolfie bowled impressively to get two good wickets in his 6 overs including an amazing catch by Peter Klein who stood firm as a bullet was fired towards him
• We were also treated to the sight of seeing Peter bowling as he glided down the hill with the grace of a ballerina and the intent of a rutting stag.  He would have bowled more however an old war injury flared up after the second over.
• Then came the main event Michael Gadd bowling in a match after a 35 year absence – a couple of looseners and then he was right on the spot – who knows what might have happened if he had a few more overs?
• The Ricky Holland XI continued to bat well and ended up with 175 for 3 after 23 overs
• A great game played in the right spirit where stars were born.

Under 14

Powerful performance by WGCC U14s ends in impressive victory

• Blue sky, bright sunshine, heat, a rolled wicket – what a perfect start to a cricket match
• By mutual consent it is decided that WGCC should bat first
• Oscar Warmington and Seb Wibaut stride out to open the assault and start smashing the ball to all corners of the ground
• Oscar quickly retires on 46 not out (with strike rate of 164%) and Seb is caught behind after scoring a good 20 runs
• Rory MaClean comes in at 3 and bats superbly from the start – Fraser Williams is unlucky to get a good ball first ball
• Rory and Zac Dawson (both U13) then build a very impressive partnership – putting the bad balls away and running well between the wickets to score on the better bowling
• Both Roy and Zac retire impressively on 42 and 40 respectively not out and should be applauded for their efforts
• Will Dixon and Ran Dawson then come into bat at the end both looking threatening at the crease and keen to get on with it
• Ran (8 runs) is unlucky to edge the ball to the wicketkeeper whilst going for the big shot which brings Isaac Paisley to the party
• Will (28 not out) and Isaac (9 not out) finished off in a flourish to finish the innings on 223 for 3 off 25 overs (a formidable total)
• Southwater get off to a lively start despite the good fast opening bowling from Matthew Ritchie
• The WG bowlers then start to dominate with Oscar bagging 3 catches off Will (2 for 9 off 3) Isaac and Charlie Conway (2 for 12 off 3)
• Frasier gets a great caught and bowled, Ran snatches a wicket with a sharp catch from Isaac moving to his left.
• The Southwater No 8 & No 9 bat well to the end leaving Southwater 89 runs short on 134 for 7 off 25
• A comprehensive victory with some big hitting and accurate fielding which made for an entertaining game of cricket – well done team.

Under 12

The U12s were in action away against Southwater on Saturday having beaten them in a close game at home early in the season.

Another win of the toss and captain Cosmo Witheridge put them into bat.

Early wickets came from Xander Boyce and Rafferty Finn before two fine Southwater batsmen put on 53 runs between them. A few runs came from other bats but again it was our bowling that let us down, gifting Southwater 33 wides and 18 no balls (2 runs are given for each wide and no ball).

Joe Aspin had a wonderful first over in U12s cricket, clean bowling the batsmen for a duck with the first ball of his over and with his exemplary fielding thoroughly deserved Player of the Day, voted for by his team mates and fully supported by coach Finn and umpire Klein.

Southwater set us 134 to beat. We started well, keeping pace with Southwater’s run rate, Zander retiring on 25 and Otis Wibaut making a valuable 14 before an unfortunate runout. Whilst their bowling also served up a handy number of extras it was clear by the 17th over that we had given ourselves too much to chase on this occasion and we fell short by 24 runs.

Xander goes on the honours board for his magnificent 25 runs retired and two wickets and congratulations again to Joe for his Player of the Day.

U10’s vs Barns Green

Barns Green won the toss and elected to bat first.

Despite a tight performance in the field from Wisborough Barns Green posted a highly competitive 322 losing 4 wickets along the way including an outstanding catch from Hector. 

Sensing that they needed to chase hard the Wisborough batters played some expansive and adventurous shots, none more so than Layla. With this came some added element of risk and Wisborough lost regular wickets finishing 20 runs behind having lost 8 wickets in the process.

An evenly matched game, the 20 runs difference between the two sides being the additional 4 wickets that Wisborough lost in the chase.

U9’s vs Southwater

A balmy Monday evening saw the arrival of Southwater U9’s.

Wisborough batted first amassing a hefty total of 331, some fine stroke play in evidence against some highly competent bowling from Southwater with very few extras on offer.

 After the innings break Wisborough put in a solid performance with the ball in hand, all 8 of them showing the improvements they have made over the season. With a good win looking likely, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Wisborough fielders hard to work hard not to get too over-excited in the process. Their hard work eventually being rewarded with a 35 run victory.

Although the two teams were well matched in terms of ability there were two marked differences between them. Wisborough were lively in the field and their running between wickets was high octane – gaining many additional runs.
