That’s it for this weekIf there is anything we need to know you know where to find us.Have another great cricketing week.#UpTheGreenStay safeCheersWizzyMatch ReportsFirsts vs West WitteringThe 1’s returned to the green and returned to winning ways with a fine performance with both bat and ball to secure 30 points against a good West Wittering side. The sun was out and the wicket looked excellent for batting which prompted skipper Sadler to have a bat when he won the toss. With recent opening partnerships not giving us the start we’ve wanted Sadler opted to revert to the opening pair that had served Green so well in the past. He and Tim “Doddy Smash” Dodd strode to the middle to take on the new ball. The decision paid dividends as, after a watchful start, the two really got the runs flowing. Sadler playing the holding role whilst Dodd began to smash the bowling to all parts. 130 runs were on the board at over 6 an over when Doddy, batting for a few overs with a hamstring strain, was caught in the deep for an excellent 86. Exactly the sort of start that Green were hoping for. Sadler soon got to his half century before he was brilliantly caught at square leg. 159 for 2.Benjamin Harm Steyn came to the crease at number 4 to make his debut. He was looking to do some serious harm to the West Wittering bowling figures. He and Byron batted well together and put on 50 for the 3rd wicket before Byron (31) was bowled. Steyn (51) continued to play his strokes though and scored an superb debut half century. After he was dismissed Green did suffer a mini collapse trying to move the score along. Thatcher in at 5 batted with 6 different partners on his way to an unbeaten 31. After their 49 overs though Wis had made a very tidy 271 for 8.Another delicious tea was consumed which this week included hot dogs and it was out into the field with the task of taking 10 West Wittering Wickets (say that after a few pints). The early bowling was a little loose and Wittering were looking to make a quick start. Green needed a bit of inspiration to get the ball rolling and they got it in the field. A mix up between the two batsmen saw them both stranded towards the bowlers end. Chris Francis had picked the ball up and was looking to throw to the bowlers end but quickly changed his mind and brilliantly threw down the stumps at the keepers end.The home side tightened up their lines with Thatcher and Napper bowling well. However WW were still playing their shots. Fortunately it was easier to set a field to as the bowlers were bowling one side of the wicket. The next wicket came courtesy of Thatcher. Lendrum went for a big shot but only ended up skying it and Thatcher had time to settle under it and take the catch. Thatcher struck again a couple of overs later when Feazey was caught brilliantly at silly mid-on by Martin Hopkins. Napper was the next bowler to strike when Tupper mis-timed a drive and only managed loop a catch to cover.4 down with only about 80 on the board and WW needed to regroup. They were beginning to stabilise things so a change in the attack was needed. Jamie Self came on up the hill and Jack Suzzey-Carter was brought on from the top end. It was Self who made the breakthrough with a slower ball which resulted in the batsman looping a catch to Steyn at mid wicket. His next slower ball and over or two later saw him take a good return catch. Sizzey-Carter got in on the act when a lofted drive was caught low down by a sprawling Jim Sadler. Hopkins then took a sharp catch at silly point and JSC had his 3rd wicket two overs later when he clean bowled Baker. With the Wittering number 11 unable to bat due to an injury he picked up in the field the game was over. The visitors dismissed for 153 and Wis had completed a very good days work.View from the skipper: Good batting performance, would have liked more runs from the last 10 overs so we could have declared early. Batsmen were just looking for the big shots rather than collecting singles and 2’s and hitting the bad ball. However good overall. Bowling and fielding was good. Team spirit on the field is good. Still only performing at 75% of where we need to get to!Seconds : Commanding performance sees Seconds secure a big win against St AndrewsThe presence of 6 players who have played for the firsts this season alongside others who have been regulars in the past meant that the skipper took a strong team to St Andrews. SCS won the toss and decided to bat confident that if the batsmen could secure sufficient runs then the strength of bowling would bring a win. With the strongest batting line up this season he could have chosen any number of batting orders but after much soul searching settled on his line-up with the help of a tombola. The master strategy was going perfectly until the second ball of the innings when SCS offered catching practice off his first ball and was dismissed. Not the most positive start. However it meant that he had all afternoon to man the score board which was probably the most productive thing he did all day. However the Tank settled in for a typically Frank like innings and our resident accountant Jack looked very comfortable playing a couple of nice shots and the team recovered to about 30 for 1 off ten overs. Jack inexplicably chipped the ball to mid-wicket and was caught. This brought two significant changes to the game. The hustle and bustle of George Nicholls to the wicket and the Accountant to man the score book. George carried on from his last innings and played some lovely shots scoring a breezy 33 without looking in danger until bowled by turning a half volley into a Yorker. We were 80 for 3 off about 20 overs and this brought Joel to the crease. Sadly Frank lost his wicket after a solid 38, and that meant we had greased lightning at the crease as DJ joined Joel. However, quick as these two batsmen were they needed to be on the same wavelength, as Joel looked to pick up a ball trapped by his feet he found DJ in his face looking for a quick single. An inevitable run out occurred with Joel the unlucky victim. We were 105 for 5 and the skipper was wondering what had happened to the master man.We needed a stout yeoman, we needed a soldier, we needed discipline and we got it. Mariner strode to the crease with the air of a man who was not going to run any quick singles, and was going to take command of the situation. He had spent far too much money on Prosecco not too enjoy his time at the crease. Batting with admirable restraint and barking out orders to DJ as to when to run and when not to the pair started to build a partnership. DJ was a revelation driving and pulling powerful and was the dominant in terms of runs scored. The score started to pile up and 6s and 4s flowed. The pair secured a hundred partnership and DJ was finally out on the last ball of the game. Here is where the sub plot began. Whilst the captain was agreeing with the scorers as to the totals at the end of every over, the Accountant had in his diligent manner been running the score book. It became apparent that double entry bookkeeping was a course he has yet to master as whilst the bowling and total scores matched there was a severe shortage of runs entered against the batsmen. Junior acted as Solomon and allocated runs to each partner, which led to a very surprised Mariner being applauded for a 50 much before he probably did. With good natured agreement at the end of the innings we agreed on a compromise but no one is really sure who scored what. Jack has decided to take the next few weeks off for revision prior to his accountancy exams (although how he thinks he is going to pass is a real mystery!)Joel’s disappointment from the earlier dismissal needed to be channelled so the skipper gave him the downhill end to steam in from with Junior bowling uphill. Both bowled beautifully and allowed the captain to set aggressive fields. In Joel’s second over the dangerous opener Hills was dismissed by a beautiful in-swinger of full length. Wickets regularly tumbled as the two settled into a good rhythm with Joel bowling a particularly outstanding spell taking 5 for 3 off 7 overs. When Harry the Hair replaced Junior he took a wicket with his first ball and a wicket in his second over and St Andrews were 20 for 8.Hole came in at 10 and swung the bat but Jacob snaffled the last two wickets. All in all we hit the stumps 8 times in the innings and the team had performed incredibly well. It was great to get back into winning ways.We were able to share a beer with the oppo and get back to the green and see the firsts win before settling into an evening outside fuelled by Prosecco and Thai curry and Peter’s braai.Well played team, it’s a shame there is no game this week to keep up the good work
