First X1 vs Arundel The second half of the First XI’s season, constituting 40 over win or lose matches, began with a home fixture against Arundel. With England’s World Cup quarter-final against Sweden kicking off at 3 o’clock, Wisborough Green skipper Jim Sadler was proactive in arranging for the start time of our match to be moved forward to 9:30 a.m., a move Arundel were happy to agree to. However, Arundel skipper Kieran Hornsby’s decision to insert the home side, upon winning the toss, proved not to be a wise one, the Wisborough Green innings becoming a runfest. Although the first ball of what was already a sweltering morning was a wide, only 4 were scored from the first two overs. However, this was to be the last time Arundel had any control of proceedings. Tim Dodd and James Newman, our ninth opening pair in as many matches, were to share our first century opening stand since 3rd June last year. James, back from the States for his only appearance of the season, was soon into his stride, dominating the early scoring with a range of crisp strokes either side of the wicket. Tim began quietly, but began to play his favourite extra-cover drive in authoritative fashion, and also twice dispatched effortless lofted straight drives to the boundary in the same over. After being dropped at backward point when 26, he moved swiftly through the thirties and forties before missing an attempted sweep, to a ball of full length that pitched on middle, against leg-spinner Hornsby. 109 for 1, Tim out for 49, ironically having been deprived of two runs early in his innings, the batsman informing the umpire that the ball had struck his glove, even though two leg byes had been signalled; apologies for that, Tim! Jordan Bell was soon striking the ball with the air of someone who had scored 97 in his previous innings but, having raced to 28 in less than 6 overs, two savage flat pulls against Hornsby especially impressing his batting partner, he surprisingly rather threw his wicket away, caught at mid-on off the same bowler. However, at 155 for 2 in only the 23rd over, a very large total looked likely. Well as we batted throughout the innings, Arundel’s was a flat, rather dispirited display and they became increasingly ragged in the field. James Newman had reached his half-century with an imperious straight six over the sightscreen at the Pavilion End. Unsurprisingly, batting under a helmet in such conditions, he showed some signs of tiredness in the second half of his innings, but did not offer a semblance of a chance apart from a very tough caught-and-bowled to Jamie Towe on 93. He reached a memorable century, his second for the club, soon afterwards, before being dismissed for 115 (containing 17 4s and 2 6s) in the 31st over, bowled via an inside edge by Hornsby, who claimed all three wickets to fall, at a cost of 82, in an eventful nine over spell. Mark Day and Alan Law now rubbed salt into the wounds by sharing an unbroken stand of 96 in the final 9.4 overs. The former’s first scoring stroke was a ‘5’, the Arundel skipper adding four overthrows to a sharp single off his bowling. Later he was perilously close to hitting Mark’s off stump with a ball that shot along the ground. However, although he was dropped at point when 40, Mark was generally in control, despite his protestations that he didn’t feel in such good nick this week. The most memorable stroke of his innings was a six over the sightscreen, moving him to 49. Mark finished on 66 not out, the highest of his three half-centuries for the club thus far. At the other end Alan made a whirlwind 54 not out, his first half-century, in only his third innings, for the club. He struck two boundaries from the first four balls he received, the second a perfectly executed slog-sweep, and later struck two leg-side sixes in the same over; the first of these, bringing up the 300, removed a tile from the roof of one of the neighbouring houses. 15 year-old Oliver Dabinett-Jays, proved to be the most economical member of the Arundel attack, conceding 38 from 7 overs, and should have claimed Alan’s wicket with the first ball of his second spell, ‘keeper Sam Temple spilling a relatively simple chance. We finished with a mighty 330 for 3. In truth, I don’t think anyone could have realistically expected Arundel to reach their target, but there was a remarkable start to their innings. The opening delivery, bowled by James Rainford, was a beamer that headed to the boundary, and openers Dan Turner and Joe Bain were to score freely against James and Hugo March. The latter has an unconventional stance and technique, but struck some sweet leg-side blows and the half-century was posted in only the fifth over. The score had raced to 67, in the seventh, when Bain (35), having responded in chirpy fashion to some banter from Jordan Bell a few seconds earlier, lofted James to the same fielder, under the oak tree at deep cover, who gratefully accepted the catch. Arundel were unable to maintain such a frenetic rate of scoring, the wily, in-form, the subtle variations of the wily Jamie Self managing to cause the batsmen, especially Turner, more problems than all other seamers in the match combined. Turner and skipper Hornsby took the total into three figures, but realistic pursuit of their unlikely target soon faded. Having earlier had the same batsman dropped by Jack Sizzey-Carter at point, Jamie ended the partnership in the 20th over, Hornsby (26) lofting a gentle catch to Jordan Bell in the same region. At the mid-point of the innings Arundel were 128 for 2, the run rate required now exceeding 10 an over. Turner, who had pulled a short ball from Jack for six to reach his half-century, was dismissed by the same bowler (for a gutsy 52) with the first ball after drinks, Tim Dodd taking a sharp, low catch at square-leg. With the outcome of the match now all but decided, the rest of the match lacked excitement. However, several fine catches were taken, two by James Rainford (at deep square-leg and long-on) and another by ‘bucket hands’ Jamie Self, skilfully managing to avoid the bench at deep mid-wicket. In addition, D.J. Dominique effected an impressive stumping, to give Hugo his only wicket from an unusually expensive six overs. For Arundel the experienced Ian Ritchie, quite accurately described as a “W.G. Grace look-alike” in last week’s Wizzy News, after he had played against our Second XI, made 45, trapped l.b.w by Alan Law, who completed another fine all-round display (what a fine acquisition he has been by the club) with 3 for 31 from 7 overs, some of his vocal sounds on delivery akin to those heard on the courts of Wimbledon in the last fortnight. Jamie finished with 1 for 33, figures that certainly do not do him full justice, Jack 2 for 45. Arundel were all out for 233 from the last ball of the 38th over, Jack and Alan running out Number 11 Spratt at 2:59, which meant that we were finished in time to watch virtually the whole of England 2 Sweden 0. There was certainly a lively, but thankfully good-natured atmosphere in the Pav, although I will steer clear of quoting any of the well-rehearsed songs which accompanied our viewing. An impressive start to the win-lose matches, the victory lifting us to fifth place. The side has now suffered defeat in only one of the last seven matches. An intriguing encounter at Barns Green, with whom we swapped places in the table, awaits on Saturday, the side keen to avenge a heavy defeat there last August. By then, we’ll also have a clearer idea whether “it’s coming home….”! Peter MattockU10 vs Slinfold
A very hot Sunday afternoon set the scene for Wisborough Green’s Under 10’s who took on Slinfold CC, at home. Our captain for the game, William, won the toss and put Slinfold into bat. The Wisborough Green Colts did a great job restricting the visitors to a total of 240. All the Colts bowled exceptionally accurately taking valuable wickets and keeping the number of wides to minimum. Congratulations to Flynn Mitchell and Charlie Long, who were our leading wicket takers with 2 wickets off their 3 over spells. Wickets were also taken in the overs bowled by Joseph, William R, Zac, Rufus, Emily and Georgina. At the end of their allocated overs, Slinfold had lost 10 wickets with Wisborough Green restricting the visitors to a total of 240 runs. Wisborough Green then set about the run chase. Our openers, Joseph and Charlie got off to a very good start with some lovely boundaries being scored and they put on a 49 run partnership. Flynn and Finn were next to the crease and continued piling on the runs with some great shots and put on a 38 run partnership. Rufus and William G were next in and did very well with some fine shots adding a valuable 19 runs to total. Georgina and Emily were our fourth pair and added an additional 16 runs to the total. Both girls hit some lovely shots in their innings. William Reed and Zac were our final pair and they also did a great job with the bat, with some strong hitting to the boundary. They recorded a partnership of 44 runs extending our total to our seasons best tally of 366. Congratulations to our leading run scorers, William R (26) and Flynn M (24). Also posting nice totals in double figures were Charlie (14), Rufus (13) and Zac (12). Only one wicket was lost in Wisborough Green’s innings which is a credit to all the Colts who batted brilliantly. The final scores were Wisborough Green CC 366 vs Slinfold CC 240. An excellent team performance in our last league match by all of our Colts who all contributed to the win and sent Wisborough Green to second place on the table.Ben Reed
