Hi everyone
Welcome to this week’s Wizzy news
Music videos of the week
First team players who played in the game against West Wittering on Saturday will understand why the first music clip of the week is dedicated to the West Wittering outfield …. https://youtu.be/GvbQzRAi4wM The second music clip for the week is for one of our Colts who regularly features on our Honours Board. This last week he scored an unbeaten 40 for the under 14 team against Ansty and then played in the Sunday X1 game against Ricky Holland X1 where he scored a six off the final ball of the game. A noteworthy achievement considering he is only 11 years old ….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVIiQ8iNvKc

Firsts vs West Wittering Saturday’s visit to West Wittering proved to be a memorable one, but mainly for the wrong reasons. For only the second time this season, skipper Jim Sadler lost the toss, West Wittering electing to bat first. The third ball of the match, bowled by James Rainford, pitched outside off stump and shot along the ground, which was a portent of things to come; although there was pace in the track, the bounce continued to be variable, especially in the first innings. Meanwhile the outfield, on one side of the ground in particular, was a shocker. Unfortunately Jamie Self, fielding at extra-cover, bore the brunt of its bumpiness in the fourth over, a very poor bounce resulting in the ball striking him on the nose, Jamie leaving the field with blood gushing from his wound. James Rainford, at times bowling as quickly as I have seen him do so, enjoyed the pace and variation in the pitch but, not for the first time this season, was unfortunate. However, having had the same batsman dropped twice at slip by Tim Dodd in his previous over, he bowled the diminutive Mark Taylor, for 19. Three overs later Ben Thatcher dismissed left-handed Gareth Lendrum, for 27, l.b.w with a ball that kept low, although the batsman was honest enough to admit that his bold choice of stroke hadn’t helped his cause. 49 for 2. West Wittering skipper Carl Tupper drove his first ball smoothly wide of mid-off (for two) and similar strokes were to dominate his innings. At the other end Brandon Trimmer also attacked from early in his innings, but in a much more unorthodox manner. Scoring heavily on the leg-side, some impressive strikes were also punctuated by a series of inside edges past his leg stump against an increasingly exasperated bowling attack, unable to exploit the helpful nature of the pitch. In only 20 overs, remarkably the pair shared a partnership of 136, the mood of the visitors not helped by a lost ball being replaced by one certainly of older condition, there being no suitable replacements available. Amongst the bowlers to suffer most during this destructive stand were Jordan Bell (16 off his first over, including three consecutive off-driven boundaries from Tupper, although he did recover to some extent, conceding 35 from 5 overs in all), Tim Dodd (28 off 2 overs) and Jack Sizzey-Carter (29 off his first 3). The partnership was broken by Jamie Self, who had returned to the field after the drinks break, Trimmer trapped l.b.w. (to another ball that kept low) for 75. 185 for 3 in the 32nd over. Spirits were significantly lifted in the Wisborough camp by this dismissal, and a fightback now took place, Jamie and Jack working their way through the rest of the West Wittering order. Tupper, who lost his rhythm in the latter stages of his innings, was eventually sixth out, for 74, punching Jamie to Ben Thatcher at point. The skipper, having earlier spilled two chances, caused much amusement in the ranks by making a confident cry of “come on you beauty!” just ahead of catching Joe Pink, off Jack, at mid-off. The innings closed at 251 for 9 declared, after 47 overs, the injured Jamie deserving great credit for returning figures of 4 for 25 off 8 overs. Jack, although very threatening at times not at his most consistent, finished with 3 for 75 from 15 overs. Despite an encouraging display in the latter part of the West Wittering innings, we were going to need some remarkable batting to chase such a target and, although batting conditions were actually kinder in our innings, we never looked like doing so. Opening bowler Harry Staight started with four consecutive maidens and, in the last of these, dismissed Tim Dodd with a fine ball, caught behind off the glove. 13 for 1. Jordan Bell looked in great nick, an exquisitely-timed extra-cover drive off Staight as good a stroke as I have seen this season. However, having moved swiftly to 22, he was dismissed by Pink’s second ball, very well caught, low down, at point, by the splendidly-named Sam Wookey. Pink was to be the pick of the home attack, returning figures of 3 for 40 in 14 overs. His second victim was Mark Day, who edged low to ‘keeper Trimmer. George Magnus had battled hard since the start of the innings, two punched square drives the highlights of his knock. However, having become becalmed, he was run out (for 20), after calling his skipper for a tight single to cover and being sent back. 71 for 4 in the 23rd over, a highly unlikely 181 more needed from a further 24 overs. Jim Sadler, for the second week running, soon looked in good touch, a fiercely struck airborne straight-driven boundary early in his innings narrowly avoided by the umpire! However, Joel Colbran and Ben Thatcher fell cheaply, the former to the second of three terrific catches in the innings, Wookey running back from gully to hold on to a skier. Then, at 93 for 6 in the 32nd over, came the unsavoury incident which soured this match. After striker D.J. Dominique had missed the ball, ‘keeper Trimmer missed with his attempted shy at the stumps. Although it was hard to see the exact timing of events from square-leg, I looked across to see Jim walking down to the track, apparently to speak to D.J.. It wasn’t clear whether or not he had indicated to my colleague that he was going to do so. As he did, his opposite number grabbed the ball, removed the bails at the bowler’s end and, along with several other players, appealed for Jim’s dismissal. This appeal was not upheld by my colleague but, rather than accept that, whatever the technicalities of the situation, a dismissal would certainly not have been within the spirit of the game, a number of the home side continued to make their feelings known to Jim, although others seemed embarrassed by what had happened. The remainder of the match was played in a tense atmosphere. When the incident occurred, well as Jim was already playing, it seemed unlikely that we would be able to save the match. That we were able to do was due to an excellent stand between Jim and Jamie. After D.J. had unluckily dragged a ball from outside leg onto his stumps, via his pads, the skipper and his predecessor shared a stand of 60 for the eighth wicket. Jim, maintaining his composure despite (and perhaps aided by) the provocation, played an array of hard-hit strokes around the ground and never looked in any (conventional) danger. Jamie, whose day certainly finished a lot better than it had started, also rarely looked in any trouble and played a series of elegant clips through mid-wicket, as well as some trademark steers to third man. The job of salvaging the match all but done, Jim was dismissed by the fourth ball of the final over, to an astonishing catch from Day, running back from short mid-wicket, diving full length. His 61 was our highest score of the season so far. Jamie finished with 31 not out, to complete a fine all-round display, as we closed on 175 for 8. So, after six completed matches, it’s two wins, two draws and two defeats. We are without a win in the last three, so the team will be anxious to put this right away to Horsham Trinity this Saturday. Peter MattockUnder 16’s vs West Chiltington
On Sunday morning, under foreboding skies and occasional rainfall, Wisborough Green Under 16s allowed a much-needed morale-boosting victory against West Chiltington to slip through their fingers, both figuratively and literally.
Winning the toss, Wisborough invited the visitors to field, and Callum and Josh Tusler looked to profit from a drying outfield with a cautious but steady start. The run rate ticked along at just above four an over in the early stages, but in the sixth, with the score on 21, Callum played around a straight one and was bowled. Green were rocked again in the following over as Josh fell for 11 with only four further runs being added, and prudence was the order of the day as Charlie and Hugo sought to rebuild the innings.
Steady scoring saw the innings reach 50 in the 13th over, with no chances being offered, before Hugo was trapped lbw, his expression on being given out failing to belie his disbelief. Charlie feathered a catch to the wicketkeeper shortly afterwards, and with the score on just 58 after 16 overs, some way short of a bare minimum challenging rate, Tommy C stepped up to the crease to begin the acceleration.
Leading from the front, Tommy accumulated 33 rapid runs including six boundaries, and by the time he fell in the 24th over the rate had increased to four and a half. The biggest cheer of the day came as Fin nudged a late one for four, but a slapstick final over as Green chased vital runs saw four wickets falling including two run outs, the final wicket falling with the final ball of the innings.
So a total of 113 to win was the challenge facing West Chiltington at a modicum over 4.5 per over, not the stiffest chase but nevertheless possibly a defendable total.
Wisborough needed a good start, and with Hugo bowling one of the Chiltington openers with his fifth ball, the improbable was on. Leon followed suit, removing the other opener in the fourth over with the score on just thirteen, and Wisborough began to dream.
But with such a low rate to chase, Chiltington were always ahead of the pursuit, and wickets were the only way the game would be won for Green. Hugo kept things tight from his end, bowling out his five overs from the start to finish with a superb two for nine. But too many extras and slips in the field allowed the visitors to maintain a run rate approaching five per over, and the screw could never be fully turned as Green tried to apply some pressure.
Further wickets for Josh, Charlie and Tommy kept the game honest, but the much needed late breakthrough wouldn’t come, and the concession of fifteen runs from the 21st over put the game beyond Wisborough, defeat coming by four wickets with 22 balls still to come.
Overall, Wisborough’s top order batsmen all got starts but failed to push on when reaching double figures, and only Tommy’s 33 made the total anything like respectable. Some tight bowling from Hugo in particular brought Wisborough back into the game and allowed a sniff of hope, but ultimately a dozen or so runs from misfields plus 26 extras conceded saw the game slip from their grasp.
The boys know what went wrong, and a focus on fielding may be the order of the day in the next training session!

Sunday X1 vs Ricky Hollands X1
The Magnificent WG Sunday XI are Glorious in Defeat
As the sun cut through the clouds and the grey background parted to reveal pockets of blue islands the Green was ready for a performance. In fact there were to be two performances on the green at the same time both entertaining and exciting in their own right and one was the Circus. The magnificent Sunday XI emerged as one from the top of the green dressed for battle and comprising an enthusiastic mixture of colts coaches, colts Dads and colts players with a couple of special guests. WG lost the toss and were invited to field by the Ricky Holland XI skipper in this 30 over contest. The opening bowlers with Leon Kilford up the hill and Mick Holland down the hill asked questions of the opening batsmen however were unlucky not to prosper. The next change included Alan Ball and Peter Klein. Both bowled well and unfortunately after Peter’s second over he could not continue due to a back injury (immediately after bowling an extremely accurate set of 6 – no-one mentioned that perhaps we wanted to quit while ahead). The Ricky Holland batsmen were by this time in good form and starting to dominate the bowling. The next pair of Chris Francis and Darren Hunter both stemmed the runs and picked up a wicket each for their efforts. Then some powerful hitting came into play. Callum Price picked up a wicket amongst the onslaught and finally Trevor Price (who attracted the ball all afternoon and let nothing through), Angus Von Schoenberg and Will Dixon ended the 30 overs. The Ricky Holland XI batted well and ended up with 225 runs.
The tea was going down very well until it was revealed that Tarni (the skipper) had made the sandwiches and then there was an eerie silence before the team moved on quickly to the cakes. With batting all the way down the batting order was always a dilemma and the seasoned openers of Chris and Callum strode purposefully onto the dance floor. Chris was quick to launch into the bad ball and the run rate sprinted furiously with Callum supporting well. On 31 runs after only a handful of overs Chris was unlucky to be caught by a terrific effort running backwards. The skipper entered the arena and by accident started to find the odd gap in the field. The weather bizarrely by this stage had changed to a persistent and nagging drizzle. With Callum commanding the other end with great maturity the partnership developed and the Green passed the 100 mark with only 1 wicket down after 12 overs. The skipper retired at 50 exhausted. Leon Kilford and Alan Ball (10 runs off 3 deliveries) came and went quickly – Alen Lang catching Alan athletically at point. Then Angus graced the wicket for the first time for 35 years and batted sensibly whilst Callum started to take a few risks at the other end. Unfortunately Callum fell whilst pushing for runs and batted extremely well for his 33. Angus followed missing a straight one and then Mick and Darren were in and still pushing for the win. Darren hit a few fine strokes and then was bowled and Mick struck a beautiful on-drive for 4 before being run out by Will (who is used to running quick singles). The final pair of Peter and Will kept the scoreboard ticking away and ended with a crescendo with Will hitting a six off the final ball. The Green ended up with 160 for 8.
This game was played with great spirit by both teams and many thanks should go to the Sunday XI for their tremendous efforts and the Ricky Holland XI for making this an entertaining and enjoyable match for all.
Special mentions : Mick Holland, Peter Klein, Alan Ball, Darren Hunter, Trevor Price and Angus Von Schoenberg for bowling.
Chris Francis – 31 runs
Callum Price – 33 runs
Will Dixon – 15 not out
