Hi everyone
Welcome to this week’s Wizzy news
Music videos of the week
We have a number of players to recognise for some fantastic performances this week. The first is a player who fell a few runs short of a century in an almost faultless display of strokeplay in a magnificent innings. He has been the highest scoring batsmen in the club this season and is a delight to watch batting. Well played Jordan …….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URAqnM1PP5E The second player hasn’t played a lot of cricket this season but his 45 runs in the Second team game against Arundel showed exactly what he is capable of … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3wKzyIN1yk The third player we would like to recognise has most certainly been on the ball this year – his batting has been going from strength to strength in recent weeks with some magnificent boundaries … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoMhkYlS33c The next player we would like to recognise has been opening the batting for the Second X1 and has shown a calmness and maturity well beyond his 16 years . On Sunday he opened the batting for the under 16 team and had to retire after cashing in on his very first half century for the club – no doubt the first of many. We’ve tagged this one for you Callum ………. https://youtu.be/qMxX-QOV9tI The final player we would like to recognise this week is normally known for his bowling prowess , but he has been firing on all cylinders with his batting this year. He scored an undefeated 22 for the Seconds on Saturday and an undefeated 50 for the under 16’s on Sunday which means he goes into this weekend undefeated on 72. ……………………. https://youtu.be/bFHEuKkTa5k

Click here for fixtures for all age groups this weekend Presidents Day After much consideration and we have reluctantly decided to cancel this year’s Presidents Day match. We looked at the option of reducing the match to a 20/20 format to enable us to accommodate the World Cup football final at 3:30 pm , but we felt that we would not do this important traditional club fixture justice. We have done this with a heavy heart and realise that this will be a big disappointment to some but we feel it is the right decision under the circumstances. We will keep you posted on arrangements for our next Presidents’ Day.Wisborough’s Got talent

It would be great to see a couple of acts from the cricket club, I know the seniors are hatching a plan. Please contact Craig and let Steve Calder Smith know if you are planning something. It would be lovely to see a junior parent’s act or a Vice Presidents act. We know there is plenty of talent around !!Race Night on the Green 24th August

Firsts The first half of the First XI’s season was completed on Saturday, with bottom side Eastergate the visitors to the Green, which was looking at its finest on a gloriously sunny afternoon. For the seventh time in nine matches (including one abandoned) Jim Sadler won the toss and, uncharacteristically, elected to field first, thereby preventing Eastergate blocking out for a draw batting second. Opener Andy Smith threw caution to the wind in the early stages, a savage cover-drive against James Rainford which struck the upper branches of a tree the highlight of his brief, unorthodox stay. He was dropped from a head high chance to Alan Law at slip in the sixth over, Ben Thatcher’s third, before edging to ‘keeper D.J. Dominique two balls later. This brought his brother, Nick, to the crease. Playing for his former club for the first time in two seasons, after a recent poor spell with Premier League Middleton, he soon looked a dangerous proposition and three times struck James for consecutive boundaries, most of them on the leg-side, an effortless drive through mid-on the best. The same bowler, who conceded 42 from 4 overs after only a single had been scored from his first two, nearly dismissed Smith on 17, though, Jack Sizzey-Carter just unable to hold on to what would have been a sharp catch at gully. At the other end Aaron Bateman, who had started with great uncertainty and a complete lack of timing, gradually grew in confidence. He struck Jamie Self for three boundaries through and over the mid-off region in the bowler’s first over and, at the first drinks break, Eastergate were sitting pretty at 97 for 1 from 16 overs. In the first over after the resumption, Jamie claimed the crucial wicket of Smith (45), a loose square-drive to a widish ball of full length well held by Alan Law. Jamie could have struck again in his next over, inducing an edge from Steve Grant, but a combination of D.J. and Chris Plaister were unable to hold on to the chance. Reprieved, the experienced Grant was soon into his stride although, in his teens, he did offer another chance, a tough one to Mark Day at short cover, off Jonny Farmer. Powerful off-drives were the dominant feature of his innings, including the only six of the match (there were a remarkable 70 4s), off Jamie Self. The total moved to an ominous 188 for 2 in the 36th over, before Jonny crucially dismissed Grant for 52, the batsman chipping a much slower ball gently back to the bowler; bizarrely, Grant lingered, seemingly the only person in the ground who thought it was a bump ball. In the following over, Bateman’s long vigil (110 balls for 60) was ended when he was bowled, via an inside edge, by off-spinner Alan Law who, after conceding 20 off his first 3 overs, finished with 2 for 35 from a tidy 8-over spell, managing to control the flow of runs by bowling around the wicket. Eastergate, for whom a total of around 275 had looked a possibility, were never able to regain any momentum within the final stages of the innings. A fine delivery from Alan struck the off stump of skipper Pete Smith and, switching to the pavilion end for his second spell, Jamie claimed three more wickets, thereby finishing with a haul of four for the third match in succession, this time his figures 4 for 55 from 12 overs. Eastergate closed with 239 for 8 from their 49 overs, somehow scrambling two runs from the final ball of the innings, which really ought to have seen a run out and two more points for the home side. On what was a good deck for batting (with just a few low bounces) and with a lightning fast outfield, we must have fancied chasing 240, especially against a side so low in confidence, having lost all but one of their matches this season. However, after the innings had started with two maidens, half as many as in the whole of Eastergate’s innings, Jim Sadler was caught at mid-on, off his opposite number Pete Smith, from the first ball of the third. The target now looked considerably tougher, but Jordan Bell, the third of three left-handers at the top of the order, pulled his first ball wide of mid-on for three and never looked back. With an array of strokes around the ground, including several glorious extra-cover drives, Jordan twice struck Smith for three boundaries in an over. Having been dropped from a straightforward chance to Andy Smith at mid-on off young left-armer Jack Saunders, Chris Plaister then struck the same bowler for three consecutive boundaries. The total raced to 66 for 1 in the 11th over, at which point Chris was caught low at cover, a second victim for Pete Smith, namesake Nick holding onto an awkward chance slightly untidily. Eastergate spirits had certainly been flagging. Briefly lifted by this wicket, the visitors soon became deflated once more, Jordan continuing to score runs at a rapid rate and Mark Day also scoring fluently. By drinks, the total stood at 113 for 2 after 16 overs and there already seemed to be only one possible outcome. Jordan’s was a brilliant innings. The most striking feature was that virtually all strokes were played along the ground, the only semblance of an error before his eventual dismissal an edged boundary, off the surprisingly predictable bowling of leg-spinner Rejo Raju, through where first slip might have been , when he was in the 60s. Mark continued the good form he had shown at Horsham Trinity last week. Happy to play second fiddle, he also looked in little trouble. Remarkably, with the field set deep, he moved from 24 to 40 completely in singles, but there were only a handful of dot balls amongst these. At times, to make use of a quote from the famous commentator John Arlott, Eastergate were “finding it difficult to bowl a maiden ball”. With his first century for the club seemingly inevitable, to the surprise of everyone Jordan was bowled for 97, a fine delivery from the Eastergate skipper, who had switched to the top end, pitching on middle and leg and knocking back his off stump. 179 for 3, Jordan’s partnership with Mark worth 113, the first century partnership for the side since Benjamin Steyn and Byron Napper’s double-century stand away to Brighton and Hove III last July. Alan Law announced his arrival at the crease by emphatically square-cutting the first ball he received to the boundary, and he repeated the stroke two balls later. Mark reached his second half-century for the club soon afterwards but, having looked set to bat until the end, then seemed to lose concentration, first dropped behind the timbers, then caught at long-on in the first over after the second drinks break, having made 57. Nevertheless, Mark has certainly now shown what he is capable of and hopefully looks set for a bright second half of the season. Alan was joined by Ben Thatcher with only 41 more required from 13 overs and they completed the job, with few alarms, using less than 7 of these. Ben cracked a beamer from the tiring Pete Smith (3 for 74) fiercely to the square-leg boundary and the pair ran smartly between the wickets. The match ended on a wide, which was a little symbolic of what had become a dispirited Eastergate display, although they had faced some very fine batting. So, 3 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats (with one match abandoned) in the first half the season and 6th place in the table. This Saturday sees the first of the 40-over contests, Arundel the visitors. After another week of very warm weather, there could be another high-scoring encounter on the Green, with a 9:30 start-time . It could prove to be a memorable day all-round….. Peter MattockU10 vs Steyning
A magnificent day for cricket awaited the Wisborough Green’s Under 10’s who took on Steyning CC, at home. Our captain for the game, Emily, lost the toss and Wisborough Green were sent into bat.
Our openers, Joseph and Zac got off to a very good start with some lovely boundaries being scored and they put on a 28 run partnership. Georgina and Emily were next to the crease and did a very good job adding an additional 20 runs to the total. Both girls hit some lovely boundaries in their innings. William Green and Miles then followed and batted very well adding a valuable 17 runs to the total with some fine shots. William Reed and Flynn were our final pair and they also did a great job with the bat, with some strong hitting to the boundary. They recorded a partnership of 31 runs extending our total to 296. Congratulations to our leading run scorer, Joseph.
The Wisborough Green Colts then set about defending their total and bowled and fielded exceptionally well. Congratulations to William Reed, our leading wicket taker with 4 wickets off his 3 overs. There were some great performances in the field with sensational run outs from a direct throws by Miles and Flynn. Additional runs were saved in the field by the rest of the team with excellent fielding. At the end of their allocated overs, Steyning had lost 8 wickets and Wisborough Green restricted the visitors to a total of 248 runs.
The final scores were Wisborough Green CC 296 vs Steyning CC 248.
An excellent team performance by the Colts who all contributed to the win.
