Under 10 vs Steyning
Another great day for cricket with bright and sunny conditions for this Saturday’s fixture where the Under 10’s took on Steyning Colts in an away game. Wisborough Green lost the toss and were sent in to bat by the opposition. The first pair of Joseph and Flynn batted beautifully without the loss of a wicket and put on 47 runs with some great stroke play. Zac and Charlie were next to the wicket and added another 20 runs to the total with some lovely batting. Finn V batted with Joseph and Flynn and did a great job with the bat adding an additional 27 runs to the total. Emily and Georgina followed and batted exceptionally well and added an additional 13 runs to the total. The final pair of Alex and William increased Wisborough Green’s total by 26 runs with some fantastic batting. Congratulations to our leading run scorer, Flynn Mitchell, who did an outstanding job with the bat along with some great running between the wickets. Steyning batted second and were held by some very good bowling from the Wisborough Green Colts. The fielding from the Wisborough Green Colts also restricted Steyning’s total with a great run out from a direct hit by Joseph Reed. However, the Colts worked exceptionally well as team with fantastic throwing and backing up. Congratulations to Alex Greaves who bowled beautifully along with William, Charlie, Finn and Zac who were also wicket takers. A great team effort with the ball and a very good fielding performance from all the Colts. The final scores were Wisborough Green CC 333 vs Steyning CC 253. A great win and team performance with everyone in the team contributing to the brilliant result.Matches this weekend

Firsts vs Steyning After a wet week thankfully Saturday was dry but, unsurprisingly given what had preceded it, the track at Steyning played low and slow. For the first time this season, Jim Sadler lost the toss and, with a side showing no fewer than eight changes from the week before, we were inserted. The highlight of our innings was a knock of 58 (our first half-century of the season) from Mark Day. Soon adjusting to the lack of pace and bounce, although he rode his luck at times, he struck some fine boundaries either side of the wicket, the best of his tally of nine of them probably a musical square cut. Mark received support from Tim Dodd, George Magnus and Tarnie Dixon in partnerships of 34, 24 and 40 for the first three wickets. Tim, unable to unleash any of his trademark drives on a surface which certainly suited his bowling more than his batting, was caught at mid-off for 2. George, whose first innings of the season had begun promisingly, was run out (for 8) on the first ball after drinks, beaten by a direct hit at the bowler’s end having pushed to mid-wicket. Tarnie played in characteristically stylish fashion for 19 before being caught, from a firm drive, at extra-cover. When Mark top-edged left-arm spinner Minh Nguyen to short fine-leg, the total stood at 100 for 4 in the 31st over. The skipper is not always at his most fluent against slow bowling but made a useful 30 against Nguyen and fellow spinner George Isaacs, pulling a full toss mightily from the latter for the only six of the innings early on and working the ball effectively into gaps thereafter. He was dismissed by the same bowler, skewing a gentle catch to cover in attempting to keep the scoreboard moving. Stuart Rainford, making his debut for the First XI, had earlier chopped Isaacs onto his stumps, but his younger brother, having taken what seemed like an eternity to get off the mark, moved rapidly to 21 once he had done so, predominantly favouring the leg-side. After he had chipped Nguyen straight to mid-wicket, D.J. Dominique, a consistently useful presence in the lower order, and Joey Calder-Smith, another First XI debutant, ran frenetically between the wickets in the closing stages, the latter caught-and-bowled by Nguyen from the final ball of our 49 overs, with the total 174 for 8. Diminutive veteran Nguyen finished with 3 from 30 from 11 overs, youngster Isaacs 3 for 46 from the same number. The start of the Steyning II reply was all about the performance of yet another First XI debutant, Leon Kilford. After beginning inauspiciously by delivering a beamer second ball, he proceeded to rip through the top of the home side’s batting. In his second over he trapped skipper Simon Grant l.b.w. with a ball that nipped back and kept low, before bowling Chalmers two balls later, played on. In his fourth over Isaacs pulled him to mid-wicket, George Magnus taking an unorthodox catch on his chest. Finally, in his fifth over, he bowled Spano with a similar ball to that with which he claimed his first wicket. 4 for 19…. Kings Of Leon an easy choice of musical selection in this edition of Wizzy News! At the other end James Rainford, who looks to be bowling with a much more consistent rhythm this season, delivered a testing spell of 12 overs, from which he was unfortunate to claim only one victim, bowling Harrison via a slight inside edge. Steyning were now 48 for 5 but, from this moment onwards, wickets proved to be hard to come by, as their lower middle order provided stern resistance, even though there initially seemed to be little chance of them threatening a victory, Tim Dodd’s first five overs yielding a miserly 3 runs. However, Sam Hunt gradually gained in confidence, in consecutive overs lifting Tim sweetly over his head, then on-driving Chris Marshall along the ground, possibly the shot of the day. It was Tim who provided the next breakthrough, at 88, bowling the stubborn left-hander Pete Smith for 12. Hunt found another useful ally, in fellow teenager Sam Sutterlin but, soon after Tim had been unable to accept a caught-and-bowled chance from the latter, one of a number of chances we spilled, he bowled Hunt for 47, the ball just clipping the top of leg stump, with the bowler’s reaction suggesting he thought it was going over. Tim’s final figures were 2 for 40 from a marathon 15 over stint. Any thoughts that an away victory was now almost inevitable were soon dispelled, Sutterlin unleashing a series of well-executed leg-side blows, including a six over mid-wicket off Mark Day. With James Rainford unable to exert the same control as earlier in the first over of his second spell, gradually the home side worked themselves into a potentially winning position. After 42 overs, they were 155 for 7, requiring 20 more. At this point James, now bowling with the field spread wide, in total contrast to the four slips and two gullys of earlier, dismissed Martin, D.J. Dominique taking a smart catch behind, after the batsman had bottom-edged an attempted cut. With 15 needed from 2 overs, and Tim Dodd having completed his maximum allocation, Chris Marshall returned. After starting with a wide, he held his nerve admirably, and the last over arrived with the target still 9 away. Amidst much tension, this final over proved to be fairly uneventful, although Sutterlin reached a very worthy half-century. Requiring a six for victory from the final ball, he was unable to connect with James Rainford’s full toss which, despite some mild protestations from home players, was not high enough to be deemed a no ball. So, for only the second time since August 2016, the First XI had drawn. All in all, a difficult match to fully assess. Having looked almost certain winners after 10 overs of the home side’s innings, we looked in considerable danger of defeat in the latter stages. On the face of it, a draw against the side who started the day bottom of the league looks to be a missed opportunity, but there were very few regular first-teamers in this line-up and there were some fine performances from those stepping up. A tough fixture, at home to East Preston, is next up.Peter Mattock
Under 12’s vs Steyning
The morning sun smiled affectionately on the green and steadily uplifted the damp foamy surface to an amphitheatre of sporting excellence.
Wisborough Green won the toss and elected to field to take advantage of the early unpredictability in the wicket and the prospect of improving batting conditions.
Then the magic began with a superb opening spell from Freddie Philips conjuring 3 wickets with 1 maiden and 1 run off 2 overs. This incredible feat included a great ‘caught behind’ from the magician’s assistant and wicket keeper – Wren Fawcett. The whole team revelled in the entertainment and added to the wizardry with a simply masterful display of ground fielding which included 2 run outs, saving a host of runs and an athletic catch. All this was complemented by a magnificent bowling display of line and length by all with Nicholas Von Schoenberg, Fraser Ayres and Hamish Ramsey all taking a wicket each. The visitors worn down by the pressure in the field staggered to 49 for 8 off their 20 overs. This was truly a fielding performance to be proud of.
After a healthy tea of cakes, biscuits and chocolate the band of magicians focused on the batting task ahead and within 7 overs and 1 wicket down the target had been achieved with Will Dixon on 26 runs not out and Tom Mahon on 14 runs not out.
This was simply an awesome team performance and all credit goes to all the players. Well done.
