First X1 vs Billingshurst

Bottom of the table clash at local rivals leaves Green floundering in the relegation places.

Battle between two stand in captains started with home side Billingshurst winning the toss and sticking Wisborough Green in to bat.

As per the start of most Wisborough innings this season the top 6 faltered with Steve Calder Smith and James Janion temporarily halting Billingshurst’s early progress with what looked to be a promising partnership.

This was not to last, as once again it was left to the lower order to rescue what was a dismal display of batting; DJ diligently holding down one end and rotating the strike while Stuart Rainford hit some crunching boundaries.

A small cameo from Hugo March helped inch the target for Billingshurst to beat at a modest 138.

With a relatively low total, Wisborough Green new that early wickets would be important and that’s exactly what they got.

James Rainford taking two early wickets with good catches from Janion at slip and wicketkeeper DJ diving one handed to his right.

Although a decent opening spell, the fielding side couldn’t capitalise as a third wicket partnership of 85 broke the back of the chase for the home team.

It was Stuart Rainford who eventually got the breakthrough, with a short ball rushing on to the batsman which was calmly caught by a back pedalling Tom Dawson.

James Rainford picked up his third with a bouncer after a sharp 2nd spell of bowling.

Straight after, 1st team debutant Will Dixon was rewarded with his 1st League wicket in the 1s and with 19 runs and no recognised batsman to come, the contest was momentarily in doubt.

However, only one more wicket would fall as Billingshurst crept passed the total with 4 wickets to spare.

After a decent team bowling and fielding performance it was another defeat for the 1st XI who look to correct their batting woes at home against Barns Green

Second X1 vs Portslade

• Green host Portslade on a beautiful but muggy June afternoon
• Skipper Frank Vickery wins the toss and chose to have a bat
• Green off to a bad start as 4 wickets down in under 13 overs with only 35 runs on the board.
• Veteran batsman Tim Dodd adds some stability before being trapped LBW
• Harry Hunter steps up to the mark and plays with a maturity well beyong his teenage years to put on a gutsy performance – ending on 47 – his highest ever score.
• Saffa Juan Vorster adds momentum to the Green innings and finishes on 50 no with the last ball of the innings – his first half century for the Green
• Portslade’s gentle giant opening bowler (6ft9) has a blinder finishing on 5 for 5 off 7
• Green set Portslade a target of 157 to win
• Lunch over, Green take to the field with Captain Vickery donning the gloves again.
• Portslade’s openers start to take control and pile on the runs
• Vickery passes the gloves on again to give the oppo a taste of his left arm straight deliveries
• Frank rewarded with wicket early on after holding onto a rocket ball.
• Another 3 batsmen succumb to the Vickery magic but its too late as Portslade reach the target in the 28th over with only 4 wickets down
• Frank finishes the day with 4 for 28 off 6
• A somewhat dissapointing day with the bat but some good individual performances to celebrate

Under 14’s vs West Chiltington

On another gloomy rain threatening Sunday morning. Wisborough took on West Chilts away.

West Chilts won the toss and elected to bat.

Oscar Warmington opened the bowling and took a wicket first ball of the match and with some continued good line and length from Joe Reed and Ran Dawson, West Chilts were 43 for 1 off 12 – A good start!

Then with a very troubling 4 overs of short balls, wides and no balls (at the expense of 56 runs) West Chilts pushed their tally up to the 100 mark off 16 overs.

With batting confidence West Chilts pushed on to reach 166 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the 25 overs.

Wisborough came out to bat hitting the loose ball, taking the extras and keeping the run rate at around 5 an over till the first wicket (Sam Williams).

Then in came Matt Ritchie no.3 (20) Isaac Paisley no.4 (18) Oscar Warmington no.5 (26) and Joe Reed (17) who all played with strength and determination to try and keep the run rate in check but struggled to find the gaps.

A total of 139 was reached in the 25 overs, 8 wickets down to give West Chilts the win.

Wisborough battled hard with some good cricket at times.
Overall a well deserved West Chilts win.

Tim Monday Memorial match

The Tim Monday Memorial Match was organised in 2017 following the sudden and very sad passing of a former WGCC 1st Team Captain, Tim Monday, on the pitch in West Chiltington. Since then every year a 3-club competition has been organised in celebration of his life between the 3 clubs where he played most of his cricket (Aldershot, Wisborough Green & West Chiltington).

This year was Wisborough Green’s turn to host the competition so starting at 10:30am three 15-a-side over matches were planned as follows:

Aldershot vs West Chiltington
Wisborough Green vs Aldershot
Wisborough Green vs West Chiltington

Unfortunately the weather forecast did not look good in the afternoon however it was dry enough in the morning so the first match commenced on time. West Chiltington batted first and after a couple of quick wickets stablised and started firing some big shots around the ground against some good consistent bowling and athletic fielding. Aldershot were always vocal in the field. Further wickets fell and more boundaries were found which left WC on 101 for 7 after 15 overs.

Aldershot started aggressively and after a couple of wickets and some good bowling the run rate started to dwindle however always was in step with the rate of WC. A flurry of wickets at the end of the 15 overs amazingly let Aldershot at 101 all out after 15 overs – it was a draw!

The two Captains debated a super-over to settle the match however eventually it was decided that a good old fashion bowl-off would be sufficient. A little like a penalty shoot-out – 5 brave volunteers were selected from each team and the team that hit the stumps the most times from the 5 deliveries would prevail. WC won 3 vs 2 at the end – an exciting end to the match.

Now it was Wisborough Green’s turn to perform against Aldershot. WG were put into the field and after a good start with two quick wickets from Hugo March and Oscar Walmington things were looking up. Aldershot then knuckled down and started to find the boundaries with a combination of big hitting and well timed strokes.

Eric Geddes and Josh Dixon both got wickets however at the end Aldershot were 137 for 5 off 15 overs – a formidable total to chase. WG opened with DJ and Richard Wilson however sadly after Richard was stumped on the 3rd over the heavens opened and we never returned to the pitch as the rain poured and poured.

Despite the early finish the competition was played in good spirit with some great performances which is a fitting memory to Tim Monday.

Presidents day – Sunday 4 July

Presidents Day is finally here – a great occasion where we celebrate the game of cricket with our President’s X1 taking on the Chairman’s X1 in what is always an entertaining match.

4 July : RunWisborough 2021 – a Few More Helpers Needed!

Race entries have passed the 600 runner mark so this will be the biggest year yet with all profit going towards our sports facilities. There will be some changes to comply with Covid restrictions and unfortunately no kids ColourRun this year. The start will be a rolling start over a hour period so please check our website (www.runwisborough.co.uk) next week for final important details. You will also receive these in your race pack if you’ve entered.

We still need a few more helpers to make the day successful and with Covid and the huge number of runners this is more complex than normal.
