First X1 vs Climping

So the first team travelled to Clymping after the deluge of rain that hit most of the UK on Friday and it was an overcast day threatened by downpours.

Farmer was keen to win the toss and get ball in hand on what was a wet wicket, which the Clymping Captain had been preparing since 8am – top effort. For the first time this season the Queen evaded Farmer and the Green were asked to bat.

It was an extremely testing first hour for the Green. With the ball swinging and nipping off the wicket it was very hard to get the ball off the square. Tom Dawson was the first victim to fall, Dan and Hoppo then went about rebuilding, but Dan and Martin did a lot of the hard work before falling for 15 and 10. 34/3 soon became 42/5 and Wisborough were in real trouble with Steve playing his famous uppercut to point, and Farmer failing with a leading edge going straight to mid-on.

Skipper Farmer had promoted Nick Klein up the order after a few good showings down the order, and he didn’t let his skipper down, with Tarnie one end really grinding, Nick started to unleash his power with one 6 sailing into the trees. Nick fell for 36, a one handed grab finished his fine innings.

‘The tail will wag’ is a saying the Firsts have heard or said far too much this season, but they were not let down. Jnr was the next man to work the ball round with Tarnie, punishing the bad balls and also playing the shot of the day with some fancy footwork before a lofted drive went all the way for 6.

Tarnie was the next to fall, smashing a straight drive into covers gut, the ball stuck (absorbed) 120/7, the innings in the balance. Enter DJ, a man on a mission, pushing singles and running hard with Jnr soon frustrated. This partnership turned out to be the best of the day, putting on 52 before Jnr fell.

Wisborough now thought they had a score at 172/8. Joey coming in and DJ crashing a few more boundaries the innings finished on a respectable 185/8.

Farmer was clear at the tea break to his bowlers – hit the deck and the Green would be in this game.

Jnr started with his normal control and beat the bat on multiple occasions, while Hoppo at the other end bowled the odd Jaffa, but the batsman targeted him early. So Farmer had to bring himself on, Pinky bandaged up and started with a hideous wide. The Batsman then received a floated half volley which was duly drilled back, quick thinking/ complete bottling of hurting another finger saw the boot put into the way, the ball deflected off and hit the stumps, the batsman was short of his ground and the danger man for Clymping was out.

Farmer then got the other opener, with Leon managing to concentrate long enough to take a great catch moving backwards. Kleiny was then introduced and continued to build pressure. The scores at the 20th over mark were in favour of the Green. Clymping started to let this get to them and a rash shot saw Jnr take another fine catch off Kleiny. With the rain coming down and light metre reading dark, another Clymping batsmen came out swinging this time SCS on the boundary swooped round to take another and Farmer had 2 (with dodgy Pinky if you had not heard)

Hoppo was brought back into the attack and his second spell was a lot tighter and built pressure. Two wickets fell and Clymping found themselves on 117/6. It was then the spell of bowling that turned the game – enter Joey Calder Smith. A zippy quick spell did the damage, and again another caught and bowled headed Joeys way, Clymping batman backing up and the ball deflected onto the stumps. The batsmen slowly walked off and Wis could smell the win. Joey continued to bowl a great spell and went through the tail with ease (147 All out) , finishing with 6 overs 21 – 3 wickets. A much needed boost for the Green and finally a game where the small margins went the way of the away side.

DOD – Jnr (I don’t drop them, but when I do they bounce on my head) Also Leon for not knowing what day of the week it was.

Second X1 vs Crawley Eagles

• Green host Crawley Eagles on a wet and sticky day
• The Eagles win the toss and elect to bat first
• Skipper Vickery steps up to take the gloves after no other recognised keepers in the team
• Green off to a great start after 3 wickets fall quickly before Eagles star man beds down to an agricultual century
• Captain Frank passes the gloves to young Raggy in the 28th over and sends star man packing in his first over.
• Vickery continues his fine form by claiming another 4 scalps – one victim in every one over of his 5 overs
• The Eagles post 203 for 9 in their alloted 40 overs leaving Green with a formidable mountain to climb with a young side
• Things prove too much on a difficult afternoon as the weather moved in and batting became a lot harder with Green losing a steady flow of wickets
• A little too late in the day up steps Will Dixon smashing his way to a classy 50 to add some credibility to the Green effort
• Green battle hard but in the end a different bowling attack put paid to some very poor batting and Green all out for 117 – well short of target
• A somewhat dissapointing day but some positives to take away

Twenty 20 team vs Loxwood

A beautiful evening on the green ultimately ends in close defeat for youthful side.

After winning the toss and bowling on a soft green wicket, the Green got stuck in to the Loxwood batting lineup.

Some great swing bowling from Hugo March and Will Dixon left Loxwood top order reeling with 3 quick wickets.

While wickets continued to fall, the visitors were still scoring runs at a good rate. Josh Dixon picking up two after settling in to a better rhythm, Harry Hunter picking up another and Will coming back on to pick up his second.

However, no more wickets came and the runs kept flowing as the opposing captain and number 9 saw the visitors to a respectable 125 total.
Whilst the target was respectable, with plenty of batting, the skipper fully believed the Green were capable of chasing the total down.

The innings didn’t get off to the best start with Tom Dawson being bowled early on. First time skipper Junior joined DJ at the crease. After a couple of boundaries DJ was then caught driving straight to cover for double figures.

The next 4 wickets fell in fairly quick succession with Joey Calder Smith the only one to reach 10.

At the other end Junior went along nicely with a number of boundaries which eventually led to him retire on 35 with the chance of coming back later.

This left Will ‘The Finisher’ Dixon and Hugo March with less than 30 runs to chase with 6 overs to go.

Will cut the lead to single figures with a couple of great shots as wickets of Hugo and Harry Hunter fell. However, Will’s chance of repeating his heroics of a couple Sundays ago were denied as he was judged LBW much to the crowd’s dismay.

Junior then returned to the crease to partner Josh Dixon, however, he couldn’t add to his score before being given out LBW with the team all out just 8 runs short.

All round a very tight match, played in good spirit, with good performances coming from Wisborough Greens young stars of the future.

4 July : RunWisborough 2021 – a Few More Helpers Needed!

Race entries have passed the 600 runner mark so this will be the biggest year yet with all profit going towards our sports facilities. There will be some changes to comply with Covid restrictions and unfortunately no kids ColourRun this year. The start will be a rolling start over a hour period so please check our website (www.runwisborough.co.uk) next week for final important details. You will also receive these in your race pack if you’ve entered (enter by Sunday to get this ahead of the day).

We still need a few more helpers to make the day successful and with Covid and the huge number of runners this is more complex than normal.
