End of Season awards
The seniors celebrated the season at the end of season awards evening in style at the Sir Roger Titchbourne pub in Alfold on 30th September.
Congratulations to all the winners of the awards
Seniors
First X1
Another very enjoyable, and let’s say eventful, season has drawn to a close. The season literally had everything, hundreds, five fors, great catches, dropped catches, disappointing batting collapses, never to be forgotten (by Hugo) last wicket and final over victories and of course a new club record score. All achieved whilst playing alongside a great bunch.
I can honestly say its one of the most fun season I have had the pleasure of being part of. We celebrated our victories and didn’t stew on our defeats. A truly fun season to be part of and I have to say I really enjoyed leading the team and the club this season.
For me the highlight has to be the team spirit and camaraderie that we had across the whole club. I can honestly say this season we really did feel like one club, across; mens, womens, juniors, the vibe it creates is positively amazing. The success of Presidents Day and the memorial match really shows what a great club we have with a long and rich cricketing history.
A special mention, and thank you, to Tim Palmer who has been a great addition as 2nd XI captain, the support and energy he brings lifts everyone!
I couldn’t do my job at the club without the support of everyone, a few people in particular I want to say thank you to:
- Firstly, to Tarni – our chairman – the first to volunteer to help with any jobs, his wise words of support and awesome straight drive. Tarni does so much for WGCC – thank you TD!
- Jenny Jones – our amazing Secretary, always swoops in and helps me, usually when I have forgotten to do something I said I would!
- Peter Klein – does too much for me to fit them all in here but his endless hours of coaching and umpiring cant go unmentioned, all with a smile on his face.
- Peter Mattock – our stalwart umpire, the best umpire in the Sussex cricket league. A lot of people probably don’t realise but Peter also gives me plenty of moral support and advice in the background, something I really do appreciate. He would have been higher up this list if it wasn’t for missing his first match in 4 years!!!
- Rob Knight – or Bobby as he hates me calling him! Another stalwart of the club and awesome to have around. He even had a dabble back into umpiring so watch out Peters – he is coming for your spot!
- Suzana – I suspect there wasn’t a game played this season where Suzana didn’t offer to score, live stream or support in some other way. Thank Suzana for everything this season (except perhaps extending the FrogBox trial for one last match)!
- Katie – from helping me with junior training, scoring a few games for us whenever we needed you, being ready to don the Wisborough whites if we were short and also the lifts home after over celebrating a victory! Its been awesome having you part of the club, I hope you enjoyed it and will be back next season.
- Finally – to our awesome squad of players, the support you guys have given me all season has been great. Helping to pick me up in the field when I get quiet, not getting (too) annoyed at batting 10 or 11 every week, understanding when making tough selection decisions and for putting up with all my WhatsApp messages. We have an awesome mix of talent and a great bunch that I have really enjoyed walking out onto the cricket pitch with this season – everyone contributes to the vibe of the team and for that I thank you all!!
Dan Vickery – First X1 captain and Club Captain
Second X1
We closed the season in style at the end of season dinner – it was great to see so many members of the 2nd XI there to celebrate a wonderful season. Narrowly missing promotion, beating the top sides in the division, recording some amazing performances with the bat and ball, and doing so with smiles on our faces and a spirit of camaraderie fitting for this great club.
Josh and Tarni were awarded bowling and batting trophies – calling perhaps for a trophy room at Dixon Towers – and Harry Maggs was recognised, in absentia, for his breakthrough year in the Seconds.
Thanks to:
Susanna – for her dedication to scoring and technology.
Peter – for his dedication to mankadding, technology and Law 36.
Lee the Groundsman – for dedication to sporting horticulture and wicket preparation.
Farmer and Tarni – for dedication to captain support and sage advice.
Dan – for dedication to the seconds, the wider success of the club and all the minutiae that no-one sees, but magically just gets done.
The the 45 players that graced the Second XI this year – to continuing the legacy of this great club.
More to come next year – enjoy the break. Not long now till winter nets !!
Tim Palmer – Second X1 captain

Under 8 and 9
Under 7’s, 6’s and 5’s
The under 7s, 6s and 5s had a stellar season this year – setting a new record for registered players (70) plus a record for number of players in a single session (65). We also lost only one Friday to the weather so had 13 wonderful evenings in the sun on the Green.
At least half of our players will now step up an age group to the under 8s and we hope they will come back next season to move from our cricket-based games to play the sport with the other coaches and against other clubs. There is plenty of talent there.
The final word must go to the assistant coaches that gave up their Friday nights to help out – Ella Lang, Poppy Sque, Edie Ayling and Mark Wadey. Their ability to keep the group engaged while the ice cream van pulls up, to tie shoe laces, to sooth ouchies and to make sure mummy and daddy can be found is the reason this all works so well.
Until next April, Get Outta Here
Coach Alen.
Chairman’s end of season wrap
What an outstanding 2024 season WGCC has had!
We had a record number of Junior registrations with 180+ training on a Friday evening. We have had the usual 1st XI and 2nd XI Saturday league competitions, the Women’s Team competing in a softball league, a few friendly T20s and several Sunday matches. Both the 1st XI and 2nd XI performed well in their respective leagues with the 2nds not far from the top 2 promotional spots. The Juniors have fielded U10s, U12s, U13 Girls, U14s and U16s teams in the league and the U13s and U14s and U16s sides also played in the Junior Sussex Cricket Festival (JSCF) in August. The U14s played very well to reach the final of the shield in the JSCF.
All this has culminated in more cricket being played on the Green by more players this season than ever before in the history of the Club. This impressive achievement only happens as a result of the many volunteers who put in countless hours for the benefit of others. I would therefore like to extend a huge thank you to the WGCC Committee for all their efforts, the Junior Coaches, Junior Administrators, Junior Helpers, Umpires, Scorers, Tea Makers , BBQers, Wizzy rollers, Wizzy News contributors and Editor and all the Groundstaff for all they do to make this Club the amazing organisation it is today.
It has been an absolute pleasure seeing so many of you enjoying all that goes with playing cricket at Wisborough Green and we look forward to the 2025 season.
