Under 14 Festival week
Massive congratulations to the Under 14’s who finished runners up in the Under 14 Festival Week.
For those who arnt too familiar with the format of the week, it consists of a number of 40 over format games played during the week culminating in a final. The Wisborough team made the final on Sunday – the very first time that a Wisborough Green team has made the final in the history of the club – but sadly lost to Horley who were worthy winners on the day.
What was remarkable is that a number of the players playing in the Wisborough Green team were actually Under 12 players playing up 2 years – Hector Dawson , Josh Braddock, Freddie Brookfield, Enzo Scamardella and some of the players were only under 13 players – Elizabeth Foster, Harry Maggs and Buddy Edwardes.
Congratulations to all the players who played during the week and contributed to the success of the team – we are all incredibly proud of you. It was most certainly a team effort with everybody making their own individual contribution throughout the competition.
Thank you to all the parents, scorers and umpires for making it such a memorable week for the players who will no doubt take away very fond memories
Big thank you to Super Suzana Braddock for her fantastic effort with the arrangements behind the scenes – co-ordinating the fixtures, sorting out the teams for each fixture, live scoring the matches and making it all possible for the players to have the fantastic week they had 🤩

Match Reports
First X1 vs Worthing
A slightly longer match report this week – the lads performance deserve it!
• Another lost toss and we were asked to bat – we would have bowled had we won, but with a strong deep batting line up we weren’t worried
• Green made a strong start, the wicket playing slightly slow and the boundaries long, meaning it was perhaps harder to score than we first thought.
• Vickery chancing his luck a fair few times, we got to 46 before Steve was caught blocking one back to the bowler
• Tommy strode out and looked every bit the man that hadn’t been dismissed since returning from Ibiza – a record that surely sees it as a future pre season tour option…..
• After Vickery edged behind for a fortunate 31, Will and Tommy (72*) set about a near 100 run partnership – both going at a good pace
• Will (37) also managed to find a fielder that could catch and Wisborough were 157-3 – a solid base to push on from
• And push on we did with Oscar hitting a quickfire 29 from 20 balls, to help bring up the 200
• Junior came to the crease in the 39th over adding 8 off 2 balls before being bowled on his 3rd
• Hugo the blocked out the last over before finally having a swing and getting bowled off the last ball
• Green finished on 213-6 – not too bad given the slow pitch and outfield – we would need to work hard to defend it
• Worthing 2nds first tea of the season – inspired by the traditions of WG teas!
• Worthing came out with the openers having contradicting styles – one swinging from the hip and the other barely able to hit it off the square
• Jr and DJ combined to remove the danger man before West Chilt style damage was done
• Worthing put on two really nice partnerships to get there total building to within 50 runs of the required total – but with overs starting to dwindle
• Griffiths removed Simpson just as he was starting to push on – another key wicket for our delicate northerner
• With Joey and Dave bowling some really good overs in the middle of their spells it meant the required rate was building
• Whilst crowds in WG gathered around a phone at the pav, Mattock (missing his first game in about 4 years) was also live streaming some hot sweaty action (yes……the match!!) – Vickery bought himself into the attack, much to the supposed groans at the pav
• Vickery proved why he has a better strike rate than Jr and Will – removing the (not so) dangerous Kaye (62 from 102 balls) thanks to a great catch by Stevie
• The wicket bought the big hitting Goldsmith to the crease – so could have gone either way!
• Will and Hugo were our death bowlers and bowling full, quick and straight further restricted the chase
• Worthing needed 30 from three overs – a tough ask but also it would only take one good over to get them over the line
• With 12 needed off the last Hugo had the honours and started the over brilliantly with only 2 scored off the first two balls
• Goldsmith then dispatched the next 2 balls for 4 – leaving only 4 runs required
• Whilst a couple of nurdles could have won his team the match he went for glory – smashing the ball, off camera, into the deep. Around came Tommy – just the man you want for a high pressure situation and took the catch that ultimately won us the match!!
• 4 needed off the last and Hugo did well to close it out under pressure. WHAT A WIN
• I have to recognise Worthing for the way they didn’t give up even when needing over 7/8 an over for much of the run chase – a young side that will keep getting better
• A great game that we had to work very hard to come out on the right side of!
• Phew

Second X1 vs Kiln Vale
Oh what a difference a few months make. After valiantly holding out for a tie against Kirkwood Vale at their place some months ago, the Seconds are now marching towards a very successful end of season burst as they completed their third win on the bounce and snatched another valuable 30 points in the hunt for promotion.
Another lovely day on the Green, another crack squad assembled – missing a few of the marquee signings this week but containing the stalwarts of the club, men and boys who have their names etched on the hopes and dreams of boys and girls around the …. village.
Toss won – Kirkwood bat, immediate breakthrough as Wolfie did what Wolfie does best – take crucial wickets at crucial times. Bam Bam, the one-two punch as Frank Vickery joined the act early door. It must be said that Frank bowled absolutely delightfully all afternoon, using the, ahem, variable bounce to his advantage, badly let down by the skipper behind the stumps on a few occasions.
Wickets fell with regular ease, despite a few catches shelled. Joshy, uncharacteristically off radar this week, took 4 nonetheless. Harry Maggs did Harry Maggs things, not deviating from his 6th stump line all afternoon. Farmer chipped in with season’s best figures of 3-fer at the end. Time flew and suddenly they are all out for 119 in 34 overs.
The chase. Tarni Dixon. That is all. 75 not out after useful contributions from Chris Francis who got the innings off to a flyer. Tarni’s grace, style and utter distain for anything other that a technically correct high left elbow was, as usual, a thing to behold. Total reached in 18.5 overs. 30 points in the bag by 4.45pm.
4 games left. 120 points on the table. 2 on the Green. Availability on an all time high. Whisper it quietly, but could the 2s be on the brink of something…… remarkable…?

Under 10 vs Under 9
A fantastic Wednesday evening on the Green showcasing our younger age groups going head to head in a keenly fought and spirited contest. The Under 9’s deserve a huge amount of credit for their fearless approach against their older counterparts with the Under 10’s coming out on top.
You can only but look forward to watching the Under 9’s playing league cricket for the first time next season. The future of cricket at the club is looking very bright indeed !
Spotted out and about
That’s it for this week.
