Wizzy News 20 June 2024

Welcome to another edition of Wizzy News – our weekly roundup of news and events at Wisborough Green Cricket Club. If you missed last week’s edition please click here

Only a couple of games played this last week and we’ve also got a somewhat brief but to the point under 12 match report to describe the morning’s activities

Honours Boards

Congratulations to all the players who feature on our club Honours Board this week

Important – parking around the green on a Friday evening

Last Friday we had the unfortunate situation where an ambulance was trying to access a property in the vicinity of Butts Meadow, however this was not possible due to some inconsiderate parking on the access road. The Club does put out cones on a Friday evening in those areas where parking may create poor access and/or be a safety concern for other road users. We ask you all to respect those coned off areas and find parking elsewhere.

Parking is somewhat limited around the Green and we would like to appeal to everyone to walk to the green if that is possible and where we have to park, that it is done considerately. Please also be mindful of the implication of your parking on the flow of traffic around the Green – we obviously want to avoid any unnecessary risks caused by the build-up of traffic. Parking is available at the Village Hall and at Songhurst Meadow.

Everyone’s co-operation would be greatly appreciated

Presidents Day – this Sunday 23rd June

We are all looking forward to our annual Presidents Day on Sunday where we come together as a club – renewing old acquaintances and enjoying an afternoon of cricket as a cricketing family.

Our Club President James Sadler is hoping for the day to be a real party for the whole club and their families, and a celebration of all great things about cricket at our unique and special Cricket Club.

The running order for the day is as follows :

  • 12pm for Pimms and Prosecco reception (everyone at the club is invited)
  • 1pm lunch – everyone at the club is invited, but please bring a dish – main or pudding (please message Jenny Jones on tel 07790 026364)
  • 2pm – 30 over cricket match – President’s X1 vs Chairman’s X1

A few competitions and fund raisers will take place during the day :

  • Guess the number of boundaries (4’s or 6’s ) during the match (£5 per entry)
  • Guess the total number of runs scored across both innings (£5 per entry)
  • A raffle for 2 Test Match Tickets for England vs Sri Lanka at Lords (£10 per ticket)
  • A Club 200 draw – you can buy further tickets to have a chance to win later in the day

Dress code : We would like to reintroduce a bit of tradition of a dress code for lunch and drinks and are requesting that everyone dress slightly smarter and wear a Club tie or Vice Presidents tie or brooch. After the lunch has finished and the match has started please feel free to change into anything you would like to – shorts and flip flops are very acceptable.

Fingers crossed 🤞 for good weather and we look forward to seeing everyone there.

Team selections for this week

Match Reports

First X1 vs Bognor Regis

– Lost the toss and were happy to find ourselves having a field

– Dave bowled some absolute jaffas coming into the strong wind – picking up 3 wickets

– Hugo bowled well and if not for a drop by Vickery would have picked up a couple

– On came Klein and Joey, Klein picking up 4 wickets whilst Joey got 1 (having had catches dropped off two consecutive deliveries)

– Wisborough were very happy with skirting Bognor for a total of 74

– Tea was taken, oh wait – no tea provided (Thanks to Jen for my delicious wrap!)

– In response Wisborough got off to a reasonable start, 11 for none off two overs….we could be in here

– Bognor changed the bowling and Crombie got given LBW despite looking to have got outside the line

– Vickery was in a hurry but holes out to mid off – stupidly hitting over the top into the wind

– the promoted Joey and Ran came and went without troubling the scorers

– DJ and Ollie dug in – with DJ getting 2 runs off 48 and Ollie getting 14 they showed the lads what was needed

– Klein and Ash, the power pair, managed one boundary between them

– After Steve arrived at the crease he put DJ out of his misery before hitting a nice four then departing shortly after (though Maskell’s glove work and sportsmanship certainly should be called into question)

– at this stage WG were 40 odd for 9, a hopeless and helpless position.

– Dave and Hugo showed us how it should have been done getting the team to 52 before Dave drove slightly on the up and was caught at cover to a sharp low catch

– 52 all out, after some brilliant bowling there is plenty of reflection needed on the batting performance
