Welcome to another edition of Wizzy News – our weekly roundup of news and events at Wisborough Green Cricket Club. If you missed last week’s edition please click here
A somewhat disappointing Saturday after both senior league matches had to be called off because of the weather. The Sunday Memorial game on Sunday however more than made up for the lack of cricket on Saturday with a most memorable match that went right to the wire… The game was livestreamed using ‘Frogbox’ and recorded on Youtube. Please see the link in the Memorial match report to view the match in its entirety on Youtube. Many thanks to Suzana Braddock and the team for all their efforts with bringing the livestreaming technology to the club.

Team selections for this week
Match Reports
Memorial match
The second annual meeting of Vickery XI vs Spiersy XI didn’t disappoint!!
- Vickery XI won the toss and decided to set a target
- Francis combo, Frank V and Chris F, got the Vickery XI off to a decent start – compiling 10 and 18 runs respectively
- Franky was run out attempting a very slow two and Franny was caught Farmer bowled Georgie
- Etheridge entered the scene as if he had been practicing in secret all summer – and got a tidy 14 before getting a good one from Farms
- Sadler also accelerated the run rate with a run a ball 17 before taking on the wrong arm (Sean O’Donnell with the direct hit)
- Hannah Vickery bravely took the attack to the Spiers XI bowling and did brilliantly, unlucky not to get more runs before Henry Nicholls found her stumps with a straight one
- Nick Lee started brightly before being bowled by the young Charlie Spiers
- This bought together Dan and Willbo with Vickery XI struggling at 73-6 – Spiers XI having bowled and fielded nicely
- Willbo was quickly on the attack with a 6 off his first ball
- He kicked on from there and retired on 53 off just 29 balls
- Dan also attacked some of the looser balls and was finally removed trying to scope Charlie but only finding the waiting Rich Nicholls – a decent 46. Vickery XI were now close to 200 but 7 down
- DJ and Hector added some more quick runs to get us up to 214, with Gav and Josh adding a final run before the overs ran out
- Tea was taken – and the now infamous Vickery (savoury) / Spiersy (sweet) combo did not disappoint. Best tea of the year!!
- Spiers brothers Andy and Ali opened the batting and had a good battle with Gav and Joshy
- Joshy made the breakthrough removing Ali for a stubborn run
- Tommy came to the middle and him and Andy got Spiersy XI into the 30s before Nick Lee got Andy with a slow one – getting through his shot early with Jim Sadler doing the rest
- In what would turn out to be a theme of the second innings Tommy complained he couldnt see it very well – not that it stopped him making 50
- Charlie Spiers looked to just be getting in when Hector bowled him with a really good one
- Sean O’Donnell came to the crease and wasvery positive, running well with Tommy and putting away the bad ball well
- This got Spiersy XI over 150 before Tommy and Sean retired – both making 50
- Franny, Hector, Franky, Dan and Buddy all bowled economically but with only the juniors picking up a wicket
- Etheridge and Hannah combined nicely to restrict Will Spiers and Harry Hunter
- Pressure was building with the runs getting tight and balls running out – this match could really go either way
- Hannah Vickery got her first wicket in hard ball cricket after a great little spell
- With Spiersy XI pushing for two when it wasnt there Henry Nicholls was run out
- This left Farmer and George at the crease needing 26 off 2 overs
- Joshy bowled the penultimate over and Farmer took him for 14
- 12 needed off the last – the match was setup nicely and with the sun shining brightly (🤨) Willbo came into the attack to try and close out victory
- George was happy getting off strike and leaving it to Farmer to try and finish the match
- Farmer went down swinging but unfortunately Will got his man with 7 still needed
- Jo Spiers came to the crease and did her team proud seeing out the remaining balls with Spiersy XI coming up just 5 runs short
- A huge shout out must go to Jo Spiers and Hannah Vickery – both fielded absolutely amazingly and bowled and batted brilliantly
- Thank you to all those that played – it was a great game played in great spirit
- Also a big thank you to Pete Klein and Darren for umpiring, Rob Knight (a great friend of Malc Spiers) for scoring and Suzanna for scoring and live streaming the cricket (yes highlights of me dismantling Farmer are available)
- Family, Friends, Cricket, Fun and all whilst raising over £1400 for charity – a great tribute to the legends of the past
- Already looking forward to the third match in the series next August Bank Holiday weekend – a great day to be part of whether that’s playing or supporting.
