Match Reports
First X1 vs West Chiltington
WG went tow to toe with West Chilt and lose out in frustrating fashion
• Another toss lost and WG were inserted – we would have bowled if given the opportunity
• Vickery and Crombie get green off to a storming start, both scoring powerful 50s inside 15 overs
• Both openers fall on 52, though Tommy and Will Dixon continue to take attack to Chilt
• Chilt take pace off and set very defensive field to stem the flow of runs
• Tommy with well constructed 50 and Hugo with a run a ball 27
• WG end with 222 for 7, a decent effort but after a fast start Chilt were likely to be relieved not to be chasing more than 250
• A brilliant tea, provided by the Farm Shop @TheWharf, was enjoyed by both sides
• West Chilt come out fighting but WG land the first blow removing capt Woodage in the 3rd over – Jr back to destroying the hopes of top order batsmen, made the breakthrough
• Tatchell lands blow after blow to win the second round handsomely – scoring 72 from 34 balls – a painful watch for WG and cricket purests alike
• WG fought back well taking Chilt from 106, when Will Dixon picked up the prized scalp of Tatchell, to 123-4 then 148-6 with Dave Griffiths bowling really nicely and picking up 3 for 23
• With 75 still needed with 4 wickets remaining WG had got ourselves back into the game
• However, former WG player Richard Wilson batted well and guided Chilt home
• Plenty of learnings to take from the game (note to self) – getting your eye in is tricky so when you do it you need to take advantage, defensive bowling and fielding positions can help be as effective as taking wickets and finally never bowl yourself in the power play!!!

Second X1 vs Hindu Unity
So, It all hangs in the balance as the 2s approach the end of the season, as we delivered an extremely accomplished victory against the numbers two team in the team and completed the home and way double. Big performances from a few of the team paled into insignificance as the teamwork, all round performance and grit shone through to deliver the 30 points.
There was lots to play for as Captain Palmer had promised the first round in the aptly named “Victory Inn” which bordered the side of the pitch in Stapelfield. Farmer had already snuck off for a quick lunchtime pint to check out of the talent from what appeared to be a very posh wedding lunch happening as we arrived.
Unity batted first and a tidy, if unspectacular bowling performance ensued. Nagging lines, good fielding and excellent catching prevented them from really getting going. That said, there was a few moments as we fielded that the thoughts of “the one that got away” did pass the captains lips. Dropping a sitter at point didn’t help (obviously used to wearing big gloves meant that there was a lack of touch.. Wolfie surpassed himself to get 6, with Joshy, Frank, George and Farms all making an impact. Wolfie’s spell was delicious and befits a man so unassuming, yet so crucial to the ongoing success of the second XI. Nick Reed added some youth and talent behind the stumps and was a constant source of energy in the field.Unity post 203 after their 40 overs.
Wizzy confident that the big batting guns could fire and secure the victory. Alex continued run of bad luck after being trapped LBW for 0, but then Jack and Tim steadied the ship and started to enjoy themselves. There wasn’t much that troubled them for about 25 overs as the runs kept flowing, Jack having found his range over midwicket after 5 overs of testing conditions. Tim and Jack put on about 150 till Jack was out for 79 – an outstanding knock full of touch and power (a fitting birthday present for his mother who was watching adoringly from the stands, after being brought on an all expenses paid trip to Staplefield Cricket Club – lucky girl).
Callum Price and Farmer quickly followed, ignoring the captains pleads to ”just knock and single and rotate” and suddenly it was into Littlehampton Territory. Palmer out with about 20 needed – the wise head of Chris Francis and the youthful bravado of Nick Read saw us home. with 7 needed from 9 balls towards the end, and Wizzy in danger of falling away again, Nick strolled to the crease knocking it off in 3 balls with hardly a care in the world. The pint in the Victory Inn was sweet sweet sweet as the climb up the table continues. Next up – Kilnwood Vale.

Sunday X1 vs Kenya Kongonis
The sun was shining and Pimms welcomed our guests from the Kongonis – many thanks to Jenny and Phoebe for preparing and serving.
Wisborough had a nice blend of Youth and Experience, and the match began with Kongonis batting first.
James Rainford (3 overs 0 for 7) opened the bowling with Hugo March (3 overs 1-21) charging up the hill. It soon became obvious that the usual Older Kongonis were sitting enjoying a Pimms whilst a number of ringers invited to play the match were batting well and racking up a big total in the 35 overs. The introduction of Buddy Edwardes (3 overs 0 -16) and Josh Dixon (7 overs 1-46) helped to bring some control. Will Dixon (7 overs 2 – 48) and Byron Napper (5 overs 1 – 42) also bowled well. A few timely wickets helped keep the total below 250 with the Kongonis enjoying the short boundary. Harry Maggs (3 overs 0-13) and Josh Braddock (4 overs 2-19) helped to finish off the 35 overs and keep the score in check at 220.
After a fantastic Tea prepared by Chris and Francesca Marshall, Tarni Dixon and Chris Marshall opened the innings. Some lovely shots kept the board ticking. But Chris fell early for 4, and Tarni was caught for 18. Hugo March and Byron Napper set about reducing the total and batted beautifully. But Hugo fell for 16, and Will Dixon for 28, leaving Byron to take the mantel. Tim Palmer batted well but it was boundaries we needed and was caught trying to achieve the maximum. James Sadler then tried a few swishes as we needed 45 off 3 overs but was caught, and Byron was left stranded on 62 Not Out.
Some great cricket enjoyed by all, and the highlights for me were: Chris’s Tea, plus Byron Napper returning to the Club and scoring a well crafted 62. Plus Buddy (under 13), Josh (Under 12) and Harry (Under 13) playing a valuable part in the match and flying the flag for Juniors at the Club .
Josh Dixon won the champagne moment awarded by the Kongonis for his bowling, and the Kongonis left Wisborough to their dinner and the rest of their tour.

Under 14 vs Rudgwick
U14’s Seal Top Spot with Emphatic Victory
WG fielded a very strong team for this last league game of the season knowing that a victory may be needed to win the division.
Buddy won the toss and wisely elected to bat on a lovely dry sunny morning. Will (34 no) and Freddie (39 no) got the team off to a perfect start, both openers retiring. Runs were added by Buddy, Josh and Harry to take the total to 154, our highest of the season.
Wisborough then produced a good performance in the field with Hector and Olivia getting us off to another perfect start, Olivia with a wicket and Hector a brace, Rudgwick were 9/3 after 4 overs with no way back. Further wickets for Jakson (2), Joe (1) and Buddy (3) brought the game to a swift conclusion with Rudgwick all out for 39.
A post-match tea was prepared by Amy and Wendy and enjoyed by all.
Reflecting over the whole season WG truly deserve to top the division. They should feel proud of this achievement as they were comfortably the youngest squad in the division, on average they were probably giving away a year a player each match, sometimes more.
There were several close games, and the team found a collective nous to win, particularly impressive were the away wins at Horsham Trinity and Edenbridge, winning both from losing positions.
It takes a lot of effort to get a season of cricket on, massive thanks to Suzana Braddock for scoring and organising, Tom Dawson and Pete Aspdin for umpiring and Bobby as the video and commentary specialist. We are also backed up by Peter Klein’s relentless desire to improve each player in every facet of the game.
A huge well done to all the players who have represented this age group in the 2024 season.

Under 10 vs West Chiltington
Match report by Seb Palmer (age 10)
On Saturday 3rd August, we played our last match of the season against West Chiltington, away. They are a team who have played together for a long time and include a lot of Sussex players.
The weather was nice and not too hot, it was ideal conditions to play cricket in!
We won the toss, and elected to field first so we knew the target to beat! This was the first time we would be playing on an astro turf wicket in a match.
10 players were selected, so we would be playing 20 overs, and we were very lucky to have Rebecca Foster and Olivia Church join us (two experienced U11 girls who also play for Sussex).
Reuben was unfortunately unwell on the day, which meant kindly, one of the West Chiltington team players became an honery wizzy green player in the field, and one of us would have to bat twice when it was our turn.
Rebecca bowled first, dismissing the West Chilt batsmen out with a golden duck! Followed shortly after by dismissing another in the second over!
Olivia continued the good form by dismissing another in the 4th over, with William Newell dismissing a further West Chilt batsmen in the 16th and Edward Greatorex delivered again in the 18th.
Mid way through it became clear that Charlie had hurt his foot, so we had to adjust our fielding positions to still play to our strengths, and give Charlie less running to do.
West Chiltington finished on 311.
It was decided that I would take Reuben’s place in the batting order, and start with Leo. We had good communication and took runs when we could. I hit a four and it felt GREAT, hitting the ball in the middle of my bat!
Archie Morgan followed by hitting another four, and Edward Greatorex hit a lovely four to finish!
We finished on 243 and Olivia Church was awarded player of the match.
Although we didn’t win, I think we played some of our best cricket, and have come a long way since the beginning of the season. I am proud of every one of the players.
Cricket has been very enjoyable and made us all think more! I think we have grown up a lot thanks to learning the discipline of playing and being part of a cricket team, and look forward to us building on this next season.
A big shout out to Peter for all of his hard work!
Thank you for reading! By Seb Palmer (Captain)
